Paul Reubens (a.k.a. as Pee-Wee Herman) died at the age of 70. He was privately battling cancer for the last six years.

And while Reubens had success as an actor in his own right…appearing in movies like Blow with Johnny Depp, Batman Returns (as the Penguin’s father), and Buffy The Vampire Slayer…it was his work as Pee-Wee that put Reubens in the mainstream spotlight.

Between Pee-Wee’s Playhouse on CBS and his breakout movie Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure (directed by Tim Burton)…the guy was a massive star for kids of the ’80’s…having conquered but film and TV.  He was an iconic character for sure.

Scroll down for our list…Top 5 Moments Of Pee-Wee Herman!   Enjoy!

  • 5.) Pee-Wee's Triumphant Return To Broadway (2010)

This one is for personal reasons…but in 2010 I went to see The Pee-Wee Herman Show on Broadway…and it ROCKED.   It was like witnessing my childhood Saturday morning television come to real life.   Funny and nutty…this show ruled.

  • 4.) Pee-Wee At The MTV Music Video Awards (After His Incident) (1991)

Listen…Pee-Wee had a moment in ’91 that happened that…hey…it happened!   I don’t know if I want to describe it!   Look it up!   Anyway, Pee-Wee made his first public appearance after the incident on the MTV Music Video Awards…and it was priceless.

  • 3.) Pee-Wee Herman HBO Special (1981)

Before Pee-Wee tapped into mainstream success with his TV show and movies…he released this hysterical special from 1981 on HBO…which was co-written and co-starred Saturday Night Live‘s Phil Hartman among others!

  • 2.) Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (1985)

Come on. This film is an absolute classic.  It’s also bonkers. I remember this being the first time I thought, “Is Pee-Wee a kid or an adult pretending to be a kid?   What exactly is going on here?” And yet…I didn’t care.   This movie is madcap hilarity and it is one of the best comedies of the ’80’s.

  • 1.) Pee-Wee's Playhouse (1986-1990)

If you were a kid in the sweet spot of the late 1980’s when Saturday morning TV was truly must-watch…then you’d know that Pee Wee’s Playhouse was one of the greatest shows of all time.   Insanely creative, psychedelic and weird, funny and moral, and simply magical.   This is one of the best children’s shows that adults can even enjoy.   Bravo, Pee-Wee!
