G’s Cheesesteaks In Toms River, Here’s My Review
G’s Cheesesteaks in Toms River, heard of it? Well, Saturday night was a big evening for me. My wife was working, my daughter was at a party, and my teenage son was sleeping over at a friend’s house in town to watch the UFC fight. So I was solo!
I had a partial plan. Watch the New York Rangers try and stave off elimination while interspersing it with West Coast Yankees-Giants baseball. Perfect. Except for the food. After a long day of yard work, and not eating since breakfast, I was ravenous! I wanted something familiar but different, comforting but exciting. I was willing to pay for a good portion and great quality. Then I remembered a recent conversation I had with our new 7-Midnight DJ, Andy Chase.
Andy told me about a new cheesesteak place he tried in Toms River, where we both reside. He said it blew him away. With that, I knew the final part of my plan was complete. Head to G’s Cheesesteaks at 1611 route 37 in Toms River.
My First Question, What Does The G Stand For??
Good question. According to the sign on the marquee outside when I rolled up, the G is for GEEEEZ. As in GEEEEZ I LOVE THE CHEESE. I LOVE THE STEAK. Also found on the marquee is the info that they sell cheesesteaks, fries, and cold drinks, and that they are partnered with Uber Eats and DOORDASH. Next, I made my way to the front door, of the strip mall that also has Rich’s II Ice Cream as a tenant.
I was familiar with this strip, not only because of Rich’s but a couple of years ago, another cheesesteak place occupied the spot G’s is now in. That place, Philly Philly closed last year. Once inside, I was impressed with the open layout of G’s. Along with the Orange booths, tables, and logos. Orange seems to be their thing, color-wise.
The Menu Is Vast.
With no less than 38 cheesesteaks, chicken cheesesteaks, fat boys, and burgers to choose from, like me, you’ll need a minute to take in that digital menu board. Unlike my wife, I do not get much anxiety over deciding what to eat when it comes to an overabundance of choices. The way I look at it, if I like what I get the first time, I’ll be back again to try something different. I went with the beef Cheesesteak Hoagie.
I had a choice of Wiz or American, of course, I went with the Wiz. It was a “hoagie” so it came with lettuce, tomato, and raw onion. They also have wings. Yep! I went with a small 5 pack of mango habanero wings. I figured since I was foregoing the fries, I could indulge. Remember, I was famished!
The Verdict ?
I’ll start with the negative. It was chaotic. A lot of yelling in the back where they were cooking. My wait time was about 20 minutes for a to-go order, although it was pretty busy, and 6:30 on a Saturday. The sandwiches are not cheap, like everything these days. about 16 bucks.
With 9 dollars for the 5 wings, I got out of there for 30 bucks after tax and a tip to the hard-working staff. Seems like a lot for a cheesesteak and 5 wings. However, I will say this. The wings were fine. Big, meaty, well cooked, well sauced. I didn’t love the mango habanero flavor, which is usually my favorite, but I wasn’t there for the wings.
That cheesesteak was bangin’. It was so damn good. Plus it was huge. a footlong hoagie roll STUFFED with meat and melted wiz. I had to dig to find the veggies!
Best part is, they had cooked onions right in the meat so you had that added flavor profile. I added ketchup and mayo, ’cause you know, fat kid.
Overall I give the cheesesteak an 8.1, and the overall experience a 7.4. I will go back for another cheesesteak, and maybe dine in. It’s a chill vibe in there with tvs and a decent amount of seating.
About G’s.
According to their website, Giacomo Pisano, CEO & Founder of G’s Cheesesteaks, established the brand in 2015 at the age of 20 years old which had started in the first location in Staten Island. Giacomo comes from a long line of restaurants starting back to his grandfather, Giacomo Sr. who made his way to
America from their hometown, Carini Sicily.
His grandfather set the stepping stones to the business by opening the first pizzeria in the family called “Dana’s pizza” which then led to our CEO’s father, Jack to expand the business of pizza, alongside Giacomo Jr’s uncle Angelo Genova who started the chain, “The Pizza Box” which is based out of Pennsylvania. Giacomo’s other Uncle Joe Riggio had taken over the legacy of the famous NY “Pizza Suprema” that his father Sal Riggio had also started, which is located in NYC. They have locations in Point Pleasant and Staten Island as well. Pluse a NYC location opening soon!
G’s has a food truck and does big catering orders for your next cheesesteak party!
