Off-Duty Cops Save Guests From Shore Point Motel Fire
Three off-duty police officers jumped into action to save lives at the Shore Point Motel when fire broke out at 3:06 a.m. on Feb. 23. The fire tore through the Point Pleasant Beach building, forcing guests to flee for their lives.
When patrol officers first noticed smoke pouring from the 200 block of Broadway, they tried but couldn’t contain the growing fire. The flames moved quickly, making it necessary to call for help.
Several fire departments rushed to help. Ocean Fire Company took the lead, with Point Pleasant Beach Fire Company #2 and Bay Head Fire Company #1 joining to fight the spreading fire.
Quick evacuation work made a difference. While one person had minor injuries requiring hospital treatment, everyone made it out alive.
The fire caused major damage to large parts of the motel. Point Pleasant Beach Fire Officials are now searching through the debris to figure out what started the early morning fire.
This emergency highlighted the important role of local firefighters. The volunteer-run Ocean Fire Company works around the clock, responding to over 300 calls each year to protect the community.
The town relies on two main firehouses, Ocean Fire Company Number 1 works from Station 42, while Point Pleasant Beach Fire Company Number 2 operates from Station 75.
The Ocean County Fire Marshal’s Office has started looking into the incident, working carefully to determine how and where the fire began.
Last month, another off-duty officer, Capt. Christopher Connolly, rescued a child who fell through the ice.
