NEW YORK, NY - APRIL 07: Presenters Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee of Rush attend the Press Room of the 32nd Annual Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony at Barclays Center on April 7, 2017 in New York City. The event will broadcast on HBO Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 8:00 pm ET/PT

That rumor about Rush’s Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson launching a side project was good for about a day.

The report came from metal media maven Eddie Trunk, who said on his syndicated show that Lee and Lifeson were talking about forming a new band now that Rush seems to be retired, at least from touring. But the rumor was shot down on Monday (August 28) in a Facebook post by Donna Halper, a former radio DJ and now historian and professor who maintains close ties with the Rush members.

Halper writes that she contacted Lifeson to wish him a happy 64th birthday and that he told her “there’s no LeeLifeson collaboration in the works. Both Geddy and Alex keep in close touch, of course, but both are very busy with their own projects. And neither has any plans for forming a band or touring or anything like that in the immediate future. As Alex just told me, the rumors are only rumors. And know you know — the rest of the story, direct from Alex himself.”

Though drummer Neal Peart has sworn off the road, and perhaps music entirely, due to injuries and a desire to spend more time with his family, Rush has not ruled out the possibility of creating new music, though no projects are currently in motion.
