Ozzy Osbourne is hitting the stage one last time on July 5 with the original Black Sabbath lineup in a show that’s being billed as “his final bow.”

The Prince of Darkness had intended to make “his final bow” years ago on his “No More Tour 2” farewell tour. Unfortunately, that tour was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic and a litany of health issues.

In light of the news of the epic final show for Ozzy and Sabbath, which will also feature an insane support lineup, we’re taking a detailed look back on how it has all come down to this historic show.

  • October 2018: Staph Infection

Ozzy has dealt with a lot of health issues in recent years, and things seemingly began to snowball in October 2018 when he needed surgery on his hand due to having three staph infections.

The whole ordeal was recounted to Rolling Stone. Ozzy said that wife/manager Sharon Osbourne took him to the emergency room when his right thumb had swollen to “the size of a f-ckin’ light bulb.”

He was feeling fine physically, but after doctors examined his thumb, they not only discovered three separate staph infections, but one of them had spread to his middle finger.

This led to him being on drip and pill antibiotics and undergoing surgery where surgeons froze Ozzy’s thumb and literally cut out the infection, which Ozzy said, “Even with the numbing stuff, it was agony.”

On October 11, 2018, Ozzy postponed his remaining four North American tour dates to 2019. In November 2018, he announced new dates for those four shows and added more 2019 North American tour dates.

  • January 2019: Bad Flu/Upper-Respiratory Infection

On January 28, 2019, Ozzy postponed the start of the European leg of his “No More Tours 2” farewell tour. At the time, the reason for the postponement was due to “a very bad case of flu.”

The next day, on January 29, the entire European tour was scrapped. An official statement was released saying, “After seeing his physician again, Osbourne has been diagnosed with a severe upper-respiratory infection which the doctor feels could develop into pneumonia given the physicality of the live performances and an extensive travel schedule throughout Europe in harsh winter conditions.”

Ozzy released his own personal statement regarding the postponement saying, “I’m completely devastated for having to postpone the European leg of my tour. It just seems that since October everything I touch has turned to sh-t.”

  • February 2019: Ozzy Returns to the Hospital

In February 2019, Ozzy was hospitalized again. This time, it was due to complications from the flu.

During this time, there were reports that part of his hospital stay included a stint in intensive care due to his flu developing into bronchitis. Days after these reports — and while she was still a co-host on CBS’ The TalkSharon confirmed the ICU reports saying on the daytime talk show, “He’s doing good. He’s breathing on his own. I just want to say a huge ‘Thank you’ to everybody that has reached out with good wishes. He’s [Ozzy] is overcome by the response that has had.  It’s kind of bittersweet because he’s so overwhelmed with it, but he’s sad, too.”

Unfortunately, on February 19, 2019, Ozzy announced the cancellation of shows in Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. At that time, Sharon said in a statement, “Ozzy recently developed pneumonia and has spent some time in hospital. Thankfully he is now through the worst part. His doctors have advised that he stay at home to recuperate for a full six weeks with no travel.”

  • April 2019: Ozzy Postpones All 2019 Tour Dates Due to Surgery Recovery

In April 2019, Ozzy was forced to postpone the rest of his 2019 tour dates. At that time, a statement was released saying the icon underwent surgery in March after he fell in his home in Los Angeles and aggravated old injuries he sustained from his 2003 ATV accident that nearly ended his life.

Ozzy said in a personal statement, “I can’t believe I have to reschedule more tour dates. Words cannot express how frustrated, angry and depressed I am not to be able to tour right now. I’m grateful for the love and support I’m getting from my family, my band, friends and fans, it’s really what’s keeping me going. Just know that I am getting better every day…I will fully recover…I will finish my tour…I will be back!”

  • August 2019: Ozzy Opens Up About His Health and Surgery Recovery.

In an August 2019 interview with Rolling Stone, Ozzy shares he had spine and neck surgery after falling in his Los Angeles home. He said, “For the first, say, four months, I was absolutely in agony. I was in agony beyond anything I ever experienced before in my life. It was awful. I’m taking physical and occupational therapy classes, but the progress is very slow. They say it’s going to take at least a year. I’m hoping that I’ll be OK and ready to go by January [when the tour resumes]. I’m really keeping my fingers crossed.”

The spine and neck surgery greatly affected his nerves and his overall balance. Ozzy said, “When they do surgery on your neck, they cut through all the nerves, and it f-cked everything up. So I’m wobbling all over the place. And since they cut through the nerves, my right arm feels permanently cold.”

Other issues Ozzy was dealing with included his overall endurance and developing blood clots in his legs.

  • October 2019: Ozzy Postpones 2020 European Tour Dates

Months before the coronavirus pandemic upended the whole touring industry, Ozzy postponed his 2020 European tour dates in October 2019.

He said in a video address to fans, “I’m here to give you an update on my condition. As you probably know, or you may not know, at the beginning of this year, I had a bad fall. I screwed all the vertebrae in my neck and had to have surgery. I’ve got a lot more nuts and bolts in my neck now than in my car.”

Ozzy continued, “I’m not dying, I am recovering — it’s just taking a little bit longer than everyone thought it would. I’m bored stiff of being stuck on a f-cking bed all day. I can’t wait to get off my ass and get going again. But you’re just gonna have to be a little bit more patient. I’m postponing the European tour because I’m not ready. I’m not retiring — I’ve still got gigs to do — but when I do come back on an American tour, I wanna be one hundred percent ready to come out and knock your f-cking socks off. And also, there’s a new album on the way.”

He concluded, “Thank you to my band and my crew and [promoter] Live Nation, and most of all, [support act] Judas Priest. I just wanna say one thing to the fans: I sincerely thank you for your patience and your loyalty. I love you. Now, will you f-ck off and let me get better.”

  • November 2019: Ozzy May Not have Needed Spinal Surgery

Sharon Osbourne said in a November 2019 interview with U.K.’s The Sun that Ozzy may not have needed the spinal surgery he underwent after suffering a fall at their LA home.

She said, “They fixed the collarbone straight away but his spinal cord was so inflamed they had to wait a week to do an operation. He was in surgery for five hours and afterwards they told us it would take him a year to recover.”

Sharon continued, “It’s terrifying when you see somebody you love so incapacitated. They can’t do a thing, and you’re so engulfed with fear that you can’t think clearly. So we didn’t do any research or ask the right questions. Now, certain doctors say, ‘Well, maybe he shouldn’t have had this operation and . . . ’ Oh, it’s a nightmare. Every doctor seems to have a different opinion.”

  • January 2020: Ozzy Reveals Parkinson's Diagnosis

In a January 2020 appearance on Good Morning America, Ozzy went public with his Parkinson’s disease diagnosis.

Sharon detailed the diagnosis to GMA’s Robin Roberts saying, “It’s PRKN 2. There’s so many different types of Parkinson’s; it’s not a death sentence by any stretch of the imagination, but it does affect certain nerves in your body. And it’s — it’s like you have a good day, a good day, and then a really bad day.”

Ozzy opened up about living with Parkinson’s saying, “I got a numbness down this arm for the surgery, my legs keep going cold. I don’t know if that’s the Parkinson’s or what, you know, but that’s — see, that’s the problem. Because they cut nerves when they did the surgery. I’d never heard of nerve pain, and it’s a weird feeling…I’m no good with secrets. I cannot walk around with it anymore ’cause it’s like I’m running out of excuses, you know?”

  • February 2020: Ozzy Shares More Parkinson's Details, Cancels North American Tour Dates

Ozzy shared with The Los Angeles Times in an interview published on February 12 that he was actually first diagnosed with Parkinson’s back in 2003.

“I’m not dying from Parkinson’s. I’ve been working with it most of my life,” he said. “I’ve cheated death so many times. If tomorrow you read ‘Ozzy Osbourne never woke up this morning,’ you wouldn’t go, ‘Oh, my God!’ You’d go, ‘Well, it finally caught up with him.'”

Ozzy also mentioned that he takes medication for tremors, but one of the side effects includes short-term memory loss.

On February 17, Ozzy’s ongoing health issues force him to cancel the North American dates of his “No More Tours 2” farewell tour. In a statement, Osbourne said, “I’m so thankful that everyone has been patient because I’ve had a sh-t year. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to get to Switzerland for treatment until April and the treatment takes six-eight weeks. I don’t want to start a tour and then cancel shows at the last minute, as it’s just not fair to the fans. I’d rather they get a refund now and when I do the North American tour down the road, everyone who bought a ticket for these shows will be the first ones in line to purchase tickets at that time.”

The aforementioned trip to Switzerland for Parkinson’s treatment would eventually get canceled due to the then-ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Sharon said at the time on The Talk, “We had to cancel our trip to Switzerland. And we were meant to go the eighth of April, but we had to cancel for his treatment. And we’re just hanging in like everybody else. You know, just trying to stay away, and be quiet, and just, you know, hold it in there.”

Days after this performance, he spoke to U.K.’s The Sun that his neck and spine surgery in 2019 was, more or less, botched. He said, “I was told, ‘You’ve got a good chance of being paralyzed for the rest of your life.’ You just don’t expect the surgeon to be a f—ing butcher. I was left in agony.”

His June surgery was performed by a different doctor. Ozzy said, “Thank God I found the right surgeon who knows how to deal with spinal problems. He had to cut nerves and you have to take f–ing nerve-pain pills, but I am getting better. I go forward two inches and back one, but I’m doing it.”

As for how his Parkinson’s disease factors into all of his neck and spine issues, Ozzy said, “I don’t shake at all. My Parkinson’s doctor says, ‘I’ve got to tell you something, I’ve seen all kinds of Parkinson’s but yours is the mildest ever’. I don’t even know how anyone worked out I had it in the first place.”

My singing voice is fine. However, after three operations, stem cell treatments, endless physical therapy sessions, and most recently groundbreaking Cybernics (HAL) Treatment, my body is still physically weak.”

He added, “Never would I have imagined that my touring days would have ended this way. My team is currently coming up with ideas for where I will be able to perform without having to travel from city to city and country to country.”

Ozzy continued, “Unfortunately, my body is telling me that I’m just not ready yet and I am much too proud to have the first show that I do in nearly five years be half-assed. The band that will be replacing me on Power Trip will be announced shortly. They are personal friends of mine and I can promise that you will not be disappointed.”
