New Jersey’s Favorite Cheesesteak Places And One Place Is The Clear Winner! New Jersey is loaded with places that make some darn good cheesesteak sandwiches. I asked hundreds of folks where they go in the state of New Jersey to get their favorite cheesesteaks. It really is hard to say who has the best cheesesteaks because it’s subjective.

Some of us like onions, peppers, and plastic liquid cheese. Some of us like just the meat or chicken and a few slices of melted Cooper Sharp.

People like me LOVE provolone somewhere in the mix, and so on and so on. Some of my favorites are on the list, and there’s ONE place in South Jersey that people go wild over.

Lillo’s Tomato Pies

NJ Favorite Cheesesteak is from Lillo's In Hainsport

I have plans on heading down their soon to finally sink my teeth into the one of their famous cheesesteaks because THIS place got a ton of mentions, and I mean a ton. How can I not get in the car and go?

I had to remove a few places that are sadly, no longer in business, or fell off the list due to changes in the ingredients since this past Spring.

Take a look at this updated list of places that made the cut. (Updated February 2024)

  • J Leno's Pizzeria & Restaurant - 1341 Lakewood Rd unit #3, Toms River, NJ 08755

It’s in the same parking lot as one of my favorite restaurants, Tenampa, and I’ve never walked into J. Leno’s. What is wrong with me? Jesse, Alex, and Johnny, a few RAT listeners, are huge fans of the crispy pizza crust, and the cheese steaks, which they describe as “top level.”

  • Chief's Steak Shop - : 109 Harris Ave, Middlesex, NJ 08846

Andy B. from “What’s On Your Plate” calls Chief’s his favorite cheesesteak joint. Others who chose them say the portions are huge and you can have whatever toppings you like.

  • Harry's Smokin' BBQ - Trailer closed - Coming to Route 37 in Toms River Soon!

Everything Harry does is big including the flavor. In addition to the variety of cheesesteak sandwiches, you MUST try the cheesesteak egg rolls, and any creative egg roll offerings that come from the creative mind of Harry Clayton.

  • Tomatoes Pizzeria - 701 Lacey Rd, Lacey Township, NJ 08731

This place has a cheering squad! Ed and several others from the food pages across the social media universe claim that this place not only makes a great cheesesteak sandwich, they make a pretty good cheesesteak stromboli. Ed likes his cheesesteak with extra cheese and raw onion.

  • CheeseSteak Louie's - 22 Boulevard, Seaside Heights, NJ 08751

If we’re talking strictly Ocean County, Cheesesteak Louie’s would make the top 3 favorite places to grab a juicy cheesesteak. My friend Tom has Louie’s in his top 2, and so do a boatload of other folks.

  • Pat's Pizza -(Home Of The Famous Cheesesteak) - 3103 NJ-88, Point Pleasant, NJ 08742

It’s been a long time since I’ve hit up Pat’s. It reminds me of my dearly departed friend Kim Demeter who was the first person to tell me about this place when I moved here in the 90’s. According to many others including Terri Apuzzo, this place still makes a great cheesesteak.

  • Tap And Growler Bar & Grill - 363 Main St, Sayreville, NJ 08872

Danny Buckett from the food pages and several others dig the daylights out of the cheesesteaks here. The picture says it all.

  • Meatheadz Cheesesteaks - 2495 Brunswick Pike #39, Lawrence Township, NJ 08648

My long time friend Ray Hurley was one of many who love what Meatheadz has to offer. How could you not? They load it up like it’s your last meal.

  • Donkey's Place - 1223 Haddon Ave, Camden, NJ 08103

Hands down the SECOND most mentioned place in South Jersey to grab a delicious cheesesteak. Lou travels from Wayne, Winnie travels from Toms River, and Artie travels from Middletown for Donkey’s cheesesteaks.

  • Big Blue Wrap & Roll Food Truck Check out their website to see where they'll pop up next

Another great food truck makes it on to the list. Lorraine Delizia and her husband Michael own a great business called “Butter Me Up”, they make a gourmet compound butter and fabulous scones, and this is Lorraine’s favorite cheesesteak.

Big Blue Wrap and Roll - Big Blue Wrap and Roll

Big Blue Wrap and Roll is a local food truck and provides catering services for events in New Jersey.

  • Dar's Steaks - 142 Haddon Ave, Haddon Township, NJ 08108

They want you to forget going to Philly for an authentic honest to goodness cheesesteak. Dar’s does it right! Quality meat, excellent bread, and lots of cheese.

Dar’s is a small woman-owned family business and we are proud to be serving our community quality food.

  • Dolsot House | Korean BBQ Restaurant - 404 Marlton Pike East, Cherry Hill, NJ 08034

Not the first place I would think of to grab a cheesesteak, but there were plenty of folks who gave them a thumbs up. ***UPDATED AUGUST 2023*** The “KOAGIE” or the Korean hoagie is not exactly a true cheesesteak sandwich. The people who voted for Dolsot House described the Korean hoagie as a Korean take on a Philly cheesesteak, but with no cheese. These people are really big fans of this restaurant and wanted to make sure that I included them. I should have referenced that in the original posting. In the meantime, enjoy this You Tube review from Nu-Treez TV:

  • Twisted Steaks - 55 Main St, New Egypt, NJ 08533

Not just a food truck anymore. Now you can sit down in a restaurant instead of your car to gobble up your delicious cheesesteak served on an artisan-style hot, crunchy pretzel. Thanks to Moe, Lynn, Tabitha, and Jim for giving these guys a shot.

  • Bruno's Pizzeria & Italian Delicatessen - 165 W Sylvania Ave, Neptune City, NJ 07753

Bruno’s has a dozen different cheesesteaks to choose from. On a side note, check out the special hot roast beef and provolone sub with horseradish sauce.

  • Brynn Bradley - 839 N Broad St, Woodbury, NJ 08096

Not only a Gloucester County favorite, but it’s also a statewide favorite. Most of the folks who chose this place said, “It’s like no other cheesesteak you’ve ever had.” This is a top 3 South Jersey favorite.

  • Vinnie's Pizza and Subs - 1817 NJ-35, Wall Township, NJ 07719

I know we’re supposed to be talking about cheesesteaks, but this is the first place I ever had a sub from in New Jersey. It was a sausage parm sub and to this day, it was the best I’ve ever had.  Now on to the cheesesteak…The bread is perfect, they stuff the heck out of it with freshly made cheesesteak and all the toppings your heart desires.

  • Boaggio's Bread - 823 E Gate Dr, Mt Laurel Township, NJ 08054

John Cohl from the South Jersey Food Scene page says, “My personal favorite cheesesteaks are from Boaggio’s Bread in Mount Laurel.” I headed over to the website and realized that John eats there a lot. There’s a sandwich named for him that is not a cheesesteak, and it looks divine. It’s made on this incredible-looking bread with sesame seeds and on the bread is: Chicken cutlet with mortadella, roasted peppers, and fresh mozzarella, drenched in vodka sauce. Thanks for the heads up, John!

  • Antney's Grub - 2001 Surf Ave, Wildwood, NJ 08260 (Located in the Aruba Hotel)

Not only do they do a beautiful job with a hearty cheesesteak sandwich, the roast pork, with broccoli rabe, and provolone is one of those things you’d list if you had to choose what your last meal on Earth would be. I’m not speaking from personal experience, I’m relaying info from a group of people who call Antney’s home when they head to Wildwood.

  • Lillo's Tomato Pies - 2503 Marne Hwy, Hainesport, NJ 08036

Lillo’s was the NUMBER ONE choice across the state to get a phenomenal cheesesteak. Every single person that chose Lillo’s swears there isn’t a better cheesesteak in the Garden State. Who wants to come with me to Lillo’s in a couple of weeks?

  • Joe's Steak Shop - 274 S Main St, Phillipsburg, NJ 08865

Joe’s has been around longer than my mom, and that’s a long time. I hear they have a secret sauce that you can order hot or mild. The sauce recipe has been in the family for more than 80 years. From Their website: ALWAYS HAVE AND ALWAYS WILL, Use A Higher Quality Of Meat For Our Sandwiches. Served daily between 11 AM – 9 PM Closed Monday.  If a place has been around longer than I have, they must be doing something right. They have weekly car shows for Tuesday Cruise Night from May through October.

  • Chick's Deli - 906 Township Ln, Cherry Hill, NJ 08002

This place is used to being called “One of the Best.” They’ve racked up many awards and have been mentioned in countless articles across the state. Apparently, I’m missing out on one of the best cheesesteak sandwiches in Jersey.  I see they do hot pork with broccoli rabe, and the Buffalo chicken cheesesteaks are one of their star menu items.

  • Piccolos Famous For Cheesesteak - 92 Clinton St, Hoboken, N.J

Another Place that should have made the original list. It’s not what you would call a traditional cheesesteak, it’s more like a steak sandwich with cheese and onions cooked on a grill. Patty will warm your heart and the cheesesteak sandwich will make your belly happy. Patty calls this place, “One Of Hoboken’s Best Kept Secrets.” It’s been around for over 60 years!

  • Monmouth Clubhouse Deli - 825 W Park Ave, Ocean Township, NJ 07712

Located in the Cobblestone Village Shopping Center. My friend Robin Thompson loves the sandwiches here.  Dell, one of our listeners suggested I add the Clubhouse Deli to the list of places selling juicy, flavorful cheesesteaks. He likes his cheesesteak on a roll with lots of onions and mushrooms.   I used to live around the corner and I love the grilled chicken panini and the cranberry chicken salad, now that’s a winner right there.

  • Mike's Giant Submarines - 700 8th Ave, Belmar, NJ 07719

We’ve ordered from Mike’s many times, however I have never had a cheesesteak from Mike’s. According to Charlie, the Chicken Cheesesteak with onions, peppers, and mushrooms is what’s for dinner in his house at least once a week.

  • Sub Doctors - 167 NJ-37 A, Toms River, NJ 08755

Jenn D. and several other people highly recommend Sub Doctor’s. They were voted one of the Top 5 Sub Shops on the Jersey Shore!  Love the special they offer as well.  Weekday  Special – Monday – ThursdayBuy any 2 whole subs and get a 3rd of equal or lesser value for $10.99.

  • Peter & Sons Sandwiches - 20 Delsea Dr, Glassboro, NJ 08028

There isn’t a sandwich on their menu that doesn’t make my mouth water. I have received a lot of positive feedback about Peter & Sons and therefore they must be included on this list.

They have quite a variety of steak sandwiches on their menu and offer chicken cheese steak options as well.  If you decide you want to keep it low carb, get the hoagie bowl.
