Meg White has been trending on Twitter this week thanks to someone who trolled her drumming for absolutely no reason.

In a since-deleted tweet, writer Lachlan Markay wrote, “The tragedy of the White Stripes is how great they would’ve been with a half decent drummer. Yeah yeah I’ve heard all the ‘but it’s a carefully crafted sound mannnn!’ takes. I’m sorry Meg White was terrible and no band is better for having sh-tty percussion.”

Even though The White Stripes officially disbanded in 2011, Meg White and her drumming is somehow a hot topic. Markay’s comment was taken to task by a number of people on Twitter and can be viewed below.

  • Karen Elson

Perhaps, the most surprising person to defend Meg was Jack White’s second wife Karen Elson. (Meg, of course, was Jack’s first wife.) Elson wrote, “Not only is Meg White a fantastic drummer, Jack also said the White Stripes would be nothing without her. To the journalist who dissed her, keep my ex-husband’s ex-wife’s name out of your f*cking mouth.(Please and Thank You)”

  • Questlove

The Roots drummer shared, “I try to leave ‘troll views’ alone but this right here is out of line af. Actually what is wrong w music is people choking the life out of music like an Instagram filter—-trying to reach a high of music perfection that doesn’t even serve the song (or music).” He added in a follow-up tweet, “This is why I walk that Dilla path and play like a drunken sloppy af amateur because them flaws is the human element in music that is missing. Real film >>>>>>> IG filter photo.”

  • Margo Price

The country singer/songwriter tweeted, “Meg White inspired me to sit behind the drum throne and pick up the sticks. Her style and the White Stripes music was a breath of fresh air compared to most of the stuff going on at the time. Anyone who sh-t talks her wouldn’t know rock and roll if it bit then in the ass.”

  • Ben Lee

The singer/songwriter noted, “If you’re dissing Meg White you fundamentally misunderstand what makes music good.”

  • Annie Zaleski

The journalist wrote, “Onstage with the White Stripes, Meg White looked terminally nonchalant and chill while maintaining a steady backbeat and ensuring that the band’s songs never got off track. Calling what she did simple undermines the whole approach of her technique and execution.” She added, “Also, for the record, there are exactly two female drummers in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: Moe Tucker and Gina Schock. Meg White would be the third if the White Stripes are inducted this year.”

  • Charlotte Clymer

The noted veteran and trans activist tweeted, “I’ve been hearing criticism of Meg White since high school, and it always comes from the same kind of insecure dudebro who just cannot accept that guys like Jack White and Trent Reznor respect her as a peer. She lives rent-free in their heads. It’s pretty pathetic.”

  • Markay went on to apologize for his original tweet.

After receiving a bunch of backlash, Markay shared a thread saying, in part, “By now you’ve probably seen an ill-advised (and since-deleted) tweet I sent out yesterday about the White Stripes and Meg White. It was an over-the-top take on TWS and White as a drummer, and was, let’s face it, just truly awful in every way. Petty, obnoxious, just plain wrong.” He added, “So to Meg White: I am sorry. Really. And to women in the music business generally, who I think are disproportionately subject to this sort of sh-t, I am sorry to have fed that as well. I’m really going to try to be more thoughtful in the future, both on here and off.”
