When it comes to albums that turn 10 in 2024, a surprising theme is “returns.” A number of artists released an album in 2014 that marked their first album in many years.
For example, Pink Floyd released The Endless River. The album was the band’s final studio album and their first studio album release since 1994’s The Division Bell. The album is made up of mostly instrumental tracks and features the posthumous appearance of keyboardist Richard Wright.
AC/DC released Rock or Bust in 2014. It was their first studio release since 2008’s Black Ice. It was the first album without Malcolm Young, who retired due being diagnosed with dementia. Filling in on rhythm guitar was his nephew, Stevie Young.
Making a similar return was Judas Priest. They released Redeemer of Souls in 2014, their long-awaited follow-up to 2008’s Nostradamus. Redeemer of Souls was the first Priest album without founding member/guitarist K.K. Downing and the first to feature guitarist Richie Faulkner.
In 2014, Bob Seger released Ride Out, which came eight years after his 2006 album, Face the Promise. Also making a return in 2014 was Billy Idol. He released Kings & Queens of the Underground, which was the follow-up to 2005’s Devil’s Playground.
Perhaps the most emotional return of 2014 came from Slipknot. The metal band released their fifth studio album, .5: The Gray Chapter. It was the band’s first new studio album since 2008’s All Hope is Gone and the first release since the death of founding bassist Paul Gray.
Many other artists had big years in 2014. The Pretty Reckless broke through in a big way with their second studio album Going to Hell. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers finally scored a No. 1 album with Hypnotic Eye.
