Danny Carey on Tool: ‘We Don’t Have A Record Deal Anymore’
Tool isn’t currently tied to any record deal according to drummer Danny Carey.
Carey participated in a video chat with Skinny Puppy’s cEvin Key recently where he shared, “We don’t have a record deal anymore. We’re free agents, so we can kind of release whatever we wanna release now, which is a good feeling.”
Tool has released albums via Volcano Entertainment since 2000, which is owned by RCA Records, and RCA Records is a division of Sony Music Entertainment.
Carey also shared the band “hasn’t been jamming” and are currently “on hiatus” largly due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“Nothing’s really been happening. But I think it’s time,” said Carey. “We kept hoping that we were gonna get back out, so we were just kind of, ‘Hey, enjoy this while it lasts,’ but now it’s looking like it could go to the rest of the year. So, we need to get the lead out and start functioning. Maybe knock out another EP, at least, or something like that. We’ve never really done that since our first release — done an EP — so I thought it would be kind of nice to do something like that.”
This isn’t the first time the idea of a new Tool EP has been kicked around during the pandemic. Carey said in an April webinar for the Berklee College Of Music, “I’m hoping, during this downtime, as soon as we’re able, maybe we’ll get together – Justin and I, and Adam. Maybe start hashing out some new Tool stuff in the meantime, maybe write another EP since we’re down and we can’t do anything else. I’m just kind of waiting on that, you know, waiting around but that’s all I’ve really got going on, you know?”
