Rage Against the Machine Raised $3 Million For Charity Via Reunion Tour Ticket Sales
Rage Against the Machine and their ticket strategy for their reunion tour has helped raise $3 million dollars for various charities in cities the band will be performing on the road.
Before tickets went on sale, the band said in a statement, “We are doing everything we can to protect 90% of the RATM tickets from scalpers, and then WE are holding in reserve 10% of the seating (random seats throughout each venue) to sell at a higher ticket price (but low enough to undercut the scalpers). We will donate 100% OF THE MONEY over the fees and base ticket price to charities and activist organizations IN EACH CITY. We are confident this will help many more fans get tickets at face value and put a big dent in the aftermarket gouging.
WE HATE SCALPING AS MUCH AS YOU DO and will continue to try to find ways to combat it. Additionally, we are donating all profits from our first three shows to immigrants’ rights organizations and will be supporting multiple charities and activist organizations throughout the tour.”
Despite being public about this strategy, some fans took issue with the charity ticket prices. When asked about the ticket prices, guitarist Tom Morello responded via Twitter with, “Yes. Read it. 10% of all Tix reserved for charity. 100% of money above base price on each ticket goes to charities in that city. Charity price fluctuates to counter scalping. When we have final numbers will list charities. Over $3m raised for charity in first 48 hrs.” Morello also noted that the band’s strategy, “…stopped approx 85% of the scalping market, but I agree that ANY scalping is horrible and we will continue to combat it.”
