Jack White is Taking an Interesting Approach to Touring
Leave it to Jack White to look at the traditional definition of “touring” and go, “Nah…Imma change some things.”
White took to Instagram to address questions and speculation about his touring plans to support his surprise new solo album, No Name. White’s new solo album went viral, because it was initially given away for free to customers of his Third Man Records store locations in Nashville, Detroit and London on July 19. No Name eventually had a proper release on August 1 at Third Man Records stores and on August 2 via digital platforms.
He wrote, “Lotta folk asking about when we are going to announce ‘tour dates.’ Well, we don’t know what to tell you but the tour already started at the Legion a couple of weeks ago.”
“The Legion” White is referencing is his July 27 show at American Legion Post 82 in Nashville. Since then, he has shoehorned random intimate shows in with his previous festival set commitments, which included an August 5 show at Saint Andrew’s Hall, a 1,000-person capacity venue in White’s native Detroit.
White continued, “People keep saying that these are ‘pop up shows’ we’ve been playing. Well, you can call them whatever you want, but we are on tour right now. These are ‘shows.’ We won’t really be announcing dates in advance so much. We will mostly be playing at small clubs, back yard fetes, and a few festivals here and there to help pay for expenses.”
The enigmatic rocker detailed, “Shows will be announced as close to the show date as possible. Some shows we won’t even decide to do until that morning.”
White’s statement then takes a turn into a sort of whimsy, and he writes, “I also want to walk through orchard fields and grab apples off of the trees at will and fill my belly full of that fruit if the desire strikes me. I’m looking for that cool breeze, you know?” (No, Jack, some of us don’t know what you mean, because we make our money at desk jobs where we write about rock stars all day long. But good for you, baby! You do you.)
He concludes, “Lots of love and rock and roll to you all and you are blessed for giving that love to others. We hope that we see you out on the road soon, if not, let’s get coffee and a slice of pie sometime? Music is sacred.”
Okay…so, how do we go about scheduling coffee and pie time with Jack White? This author thinks they’d hit it off.
