Lzzy Hale on the Best Part About Coming Out as Bi
Lzzy Hale is a rock star in multiple ways. Obviously, she’s an incredible singer/guitarist for Halestorm and a wonderful role model for women and girls, but she’s also one of rock’s best LGBTQ+ icons.
In a new interview with Metal Hammer, Hale talks about how casually coming out at bi led to quite a reaction. She admits that she didn’t realize just how many people didn’t know she was bi, save for her inner circle of bandmates, friends and parents. Hale values her privacy but also enjoys being open about her identity.
Hale noted that one of the joys of being out is being able to connect with fans. She said, “I get these amazing hugs from young people that come to our shows and they’re trying to come out to their parents or they’re afraid to. And I’m in a place in my life now where I can talk openly about all of these things and give something back.”
“Unapologetically Bisexual”
In June 2022, Hale celebrated Pride Month with an Instagram post where she touched on her identity and her initial challenges with it.
She began, “I’ve been approached by many outlets this month talking about pride … but I’m deciding to post this …straight from this lil bi – horse’s mouth.”
Hale continued, “I understood there was something different about me from an early age. Growing up in a semi-Christian household, all of the things I was feeling were inherently wrong. So I hid my bisexuality for a long time. It was through being in a band, getting out of organized religion, finding my tribe and trudging through the dark murky waters of life that I was then able to be truly comfortable owning all the things that make me…Me.”
She added, “I’m unapologetically bisexual. Navigating within my own spectrum of this tremendous rainbow that we are all a part of. What I hope to pass onto you, whether you are in a state of pride or still riding the high seas… is that by being your true self, embracing what makes you stand out to others, and owning your weird… these things ultimately become your superpowers. Your true self IS precious, no one can take it from you unless you let them. Wield it like a secret weapon.”
Hale concluded, “As far as I know…We only get one time around this ride. So, live and breathe every single part of you. The good, the bad, the colorful and the queer. Rock on motherf—ers! I celebrate you!”
