The Mets New Uniforms: Home Run Or Strike Out?
The New York Mets have revealed their new “City Connect” uniforms, and the jury still appears to be out on whether they are cool or kooky.
What Are City Connect Uniforms?
According to Major League Baseball, City Connect is a brand name for a line of alternate uniforms made by Nike for almost all MLB teams. The uniforms feature different color schemes, typefaces, and graphic elements compared with the teams’ typical home and away uniforms. The uniforms are designed to reflect the cultural aspects of each team’s home city. Of MLB’s 30 teams, 20 have a City Connect uniform as of 2023, with an additional eight teams scheduled to debut theirs in 2024. The New York Yankees and Oakland Athletics are the only two teams without a City Connect uniform.
The Mets New Uniforms Evoke Gotham
The duds have a gray base, purple pinstripes and lettering, and white pants. The jersey features the New York City abbreviation “NYC” across the chest. The cap features the Mets’ NY logo along with the Queensboro Bridge. That is the bridge that connects to the New York City boroughs, Manhattan, and Queens, where The Mets play at Citi (no connection) Field. However, in my opinion, the uniform tops seem a bit too dark, almost as if they took design advice from Tim Burton or Christopher Nolan. Well, the Mets Dark Knight has long since retired, and the team now has new stars and their new uniforms.
The Comments On Socials Have Not Been Kind
From suggesting that the Mets City Connect uniform designer be fired by Nike, to being called a rip-off of the Yankees pinstripes. Then there is my favorite Flushing foul call, someone suggesting the Mets City Connect caps are similar to ones you would find in the discount bin at Lids in the mall. I’ll let you be the judge. The Mets unveil their new uniforms next Saturday at Citi Field.
