If You Can’t Stand on One Leg For at Least 10 Seconds, You Might Die Within 10 Years
People over the age of 50 who can’t stand on one leg for 10 seconds are nearly twice as likely to die within ten years. Scientists in Brazil say a simple and safe balance test should become part of a routine health check for older adults. Balance tends to stay relatively steady until someone reaches their 50s, then it starts to rapidly decline.
As part of a check-up, participants had to stand on one leg for 10 seconds without holding on to anything. They were asked to place the front of their free foot on the back of the opposite lower leg, while keeping their arms by their sides staring straight ahead. Researchers allowed each person to try it up to three times on either foot.
One in five people failed the test and this percentage rose in tandem with age — doubling at five-year intervals starting at age 51.
Among those 51 to 55, nearly five percent failed. Eight percent failed between ages 56 and 60. Eighteen percent failed between 61 and 65, and 37% failed between ages 66 and 70.
If you ask Gotts, he’ll tell you that he’s been failing this test since drinking his first beer. Every cop in Monmouth and Ocean County knows this.
I Exercise regularly, and I do some balance workouts using the Bosu Ball which is used for stability and balance. Google” Bosu Ball” and you’ll recognize this product if you’ve ever been inside a gym.
