On The Hunt For The Best French Onion Soup In Ocean County: Here Are 12 Places To Try

I love making soups and stews this time of year. The Fall and the Winter are my most creative seasons when it comes to cooking or baking warm comforting dishes.

I rarely used my crockpot or Instant Pot which is crazy because they are big time savers. There’s just something fulfilling about standing over the stove adding herbs, spices, veggies, legumes, protein, and stock to a large pot.

The feeling I get knowing that the people I love will be consuming the results in a few hours just fills me with joy.

I’m particular about where I go outside of my home when it comes to soups, chowders, and bisques.

I’m weird about ordering those dishes. I must know ahead of time that the soup, bisque, or chowder is well received by my food loving family and friends.

I have seldom tried soups in diners I don’t normally frequent without any prior reviews.

Most diner soups are way too salty, especially French Onion soup.

There are 2 diners in Ocean County and 1 in Monmouth County where I know for certain the French onion soup is an absolute winner.

Since this article is about finding some of the best French onion soup in Ocean County, I’m going to go ahead and tell you the one diner in Monmouth County that gets my thumbs up for their wonderful French onion soup. That place is the All Seasons Diner at 176 Wyckoff Rd, Eatontown, NJ 07724.

That was one of my favorite diners when I lived in Ocean Township. When we pass through Ocean Township in the Fall or Winter, Bruce and I order a hot hearty bowl of their French onion soup.
Now, it’s time to reveal some favorite places on my radar and the radar of my foodie brothers and sister.

Here are some of the best bowls or crocks of French onion soup in Ocean County.

  • Rainbow Diner Restaurant - 849 NJ-70, Brick Township, NJ 08724

    First of all, let me warn you, GO HUNGRY! The portions here are enough for 2 meals. Second of all, this may become your place to get some of the best diner French onion soup. They don’t salt the daylights out of it!

  • Four Seasons Diner - 823 Fischer Blvd, Toms River, NJ 08753

    A hearty crock of French onion soup with a blend of mozzarella and Swiss cheese, and croutons tastes like home. The people who run this place are wonderful. Not only do they make great food, they give back to the community. I love local business owners who care about the food they serve as much as they care about the people they are feeding.

  • River Rock Restaurant & Marina Bar - 1600 NJ-70, Brick Township, NJ 08724

    The French onion soup here is nothing short of amazing! May I add that the wings, the wood fired pizza, and the burgers are also big stars on the River Rock menu.  It’s a great place to watch Sunday football too.

     

  • Ark Pub & Eatery - 401 NJ-35, Point Pleasant Beach, NJ 08742

    The Ark is well known for some of the best French Onion Soup in Point Pleasant. Oh those frizzled onions are divine.

    The burgers are bangin’ too. In fact the Port Wine Cheddar Cheese Burger was voted the best burger on the Jersey Shore. It must be those delicious caramelized onions.

     

  • Captain's Inn - 304 E Lacey Rd, Forked River, NJ 08731

    The Captain’s Inn is famous for their She Crab soup with sherry, and the French onion soup is no slouch either. I love the old school vibe of this place. Good seafood, old school vibe, and it’s by the water.

  • Three B's Bar and Bistro - 314 NJ-70, Lakehurst, NJ 08733

    Now these folks make a nice French onion soup. I love that I can taste a hint of beer. Yes, instead of sherry, they add beer to their beef broth. Not sure what kind of beer, but it is interesting. Caramelized onions, a crouton, and real Gruyere cheese round out this lovely crock of happiness.  Oh, and the pierogies are divine.

     

     

  • Frankie's Bar & Grill - 414 Richmond Ave, Point Pleasant Beach, NJ 08742

    A good pub is known for their wings, burgers, and beer selection. Frankie’s is known for all of those things and more. The French onion soup is a must try here. It is a crock of fabulousness with a Swiss – Munster cheese blend, melted beautifully over the crock, and definitely a must order in the Fall and Winter months. So good, so comforting.

     

  • The Old Causeway Steak & Oyster House - 1201 E Bay Ave, Manahawkin, NJ 08050

    Sitting in the bar area enjoying a plate of fire roasted oysters, a lobster grilled cheese, and a hearty bowl of their soul warming French onion soup. That’s a great meal! Adding a cocktail makes it a perfect meal.

     

  • The Office Restaurant & Lounge - 820 Main St, Toms River, NJ 08753

    My husband has ordered the French onion soup here a few times. After tasting his for the first time, turned me into a fan.  I usually order the house made loaded chili during the cold months, that’s good too. Next time, I’m getting the French onion soup which is also made in house and not from a can from some processing plant.

     

  • Beacon 70 - 799 NJ-70, Brick Township, NJ 08723

    They have a terrific French onion soup at Beacon 70. I also love the brick oven baked French onion pizza, topped with breaded chicken, a luscious onion gravy , a blend of mozzarella, provolone and gruyere cheese, and fresh thyme. How can you say no to those comforting dishes?

  • Donovan's Bar & Grill - 1900 NJ-70, Manchester Township, NJ 08759

    I love Donovan’s for more reasons than serving a hearty crock of French onion soup with a huge homemade crouton and the mound of melted mozzarella dripping from the crock. I just love the servers, the food, especially the burgers, and Billy, who greets us every time we walk through the door.

  • Shore Points BBQ - 816 Arnold Ave, Point Pleasant Beach, NJ 08742

    Not just a BBQ joint, but a place that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and probably the best looking French onion soup I’ve ever seen. Just the other day, I came across a photo of their epic crock of French onion soup, complete with an onion ring crown. The photo is the reason they made the list. They’re closed on Monday and Tuesday, so my mouth will have to wait for this golden bowl of goodness.
