WHY I’M WALKING:
I am joining hundreds of thousands of people across the country who are walking in the Out of the Darkness Community Walks to prevent suicide and support AFSP’s mission to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.
The reason I’m doing this walk is because I’ve been personally challenged in the area of suicide myself. My dear friend John was a truly nice guy. John J was a local police officer and member of the WRAT volleyball team. We had tons of laughs together down on 5th Avenue in Belmar. He once wrote a thank you card to me saying one of the kindest, nicest compliments I’ve ever received saying, “Carl you always have something nice to say. Thanks!”
But one day I got a phone call that I will never forget. All of his friends are still visited by deep sadness…
Mental health is such a challenge these days. The epidemic put so many people at risk, especially young people. Parents of teenagers, I know you hear me on this one… Teens being cut off from friends was an impossible ask… Once again, I know it firsthand… Thankfully, the members of my own family who found themselves crushed by the social impact of the pandemic found the help they needed through their caring parents and families. The age of sweeping mental health under the rug are nearing the end – the era of being able to reach out and speak is upon us.
