I love making soups and stews this time of year. Fall and Winter are my most creative seasons when it comes to cooking or baking warm comforting dishes.

I rarely used my crockpot or Instant Pot which is crazy because they are really big time savers. I’m telling you, there’s just something fulfilling about standing over the stove adding herbs, spices, veggies, legumes, protein, and stock to a large pot.

The feeling I get knowing that the people I love will be consuming the results in a few hours just fills my heart with joy.

I’m particular about where I go outside of my home when it comes to soups, chowders, and bisques.

I’m weird about ordering those dishes. I must know ahead of time that the soup, bisque, or chowder is well received by my food loving family and friends as well as my fellow foodies online.

Seldom have I tried soups in diners I don’t normally frequent without any prior reviews from those in the know.

Most diner soups are way too salty, especially French Onion soup.

There are 2 diners in Ocean County and 1 in Monmouth County where I know for certain the French onion soup is an absolute winner.

Since this article is about finding some of the best French onion soup in Monmouth County, I’m going to go ahead and tell you the 2 diners in Ocean County that get a thumbs up from me for their wonderful French onion soup. Those places are: Four Seasons Diner on Fischer Blvd in Toms River, with their delicious blend of mozzarella and Swiss cheese, and the Rainbow Diner on Route 70 in Brick, N.J. with their perfectly seasoned broth and melted mozzarella.

Now, it’s time to reveal some favorite places on my radar and the radar of my foodie brothers and sister.

  • Pascal & Sabine - 601 Bangs Ave, Asbury Park, NJ 07712

How can a place that specializes in French comfort food not make the list? The garlicy escargots, the magnificent Coq Au Vin, and the flavorful, French onion soup with real Gruyère cheese in all it’s melted glory. I have been here a few times and need to go back several times more. The duck cassoulet was a 5 star dish for me.

  • All Seasons Diner - 176 Wyckoff Rd, Eatontown, NJ 07724

It was our 2nd home when we lived in Ocean Township, but we still visit. One of the reasons would be the perfectly seasoned French onion soup with mounds of melted mozzarella. The matzoh balls in the chicken soup are fluffy and delicious too.

  • Pour House - 640 Shrewsbury Ave, Tinton Falls, NJ 07701

This place is comfort food central! The potato and cheese pierogies, burgers, crab meltaways, onion rings and the French onion soup are just a few of my favorites.. The French onion soup tastes like you’re being wrapped in a warm blanket of deliciousness. The tasty broth loaded with caramelized onions, melted Swiss, and the seasoned crispy onions on top make this dish pure comfort in a crock.
    Pour House French Onion

It’s Oktobefest with the best menu of German favorites in the area. You can actually order German fare year round.

  • Joey Kaper's House - Somewhere in Long Branch

Joe displays his cooking chops every chance he gets as one of the founders and administrators of the “What’s On Your Plate” page on Facebook. Joe, I need an invitation. Just look at this gorgeous crock of French onion soup this man created.

  • R BAR - 1114 Main St, Asbury Park, NJ 07712

My friend and listener Tony laid it out for me, “The French onion soup at R Bar is amazing.”  The menu describes it as – Melted Gruyère Cheese, Onions, Chives, and bread rounds.  Ok Tony, I’ll take your word for it. He also recommends the fried chicken because he say’s you’ll never taste anything like it. I really like this place and the New Orleans inspired menu. Such a cool hangout.

  • My Kitchen Witch - 29 Beach Rd, Monmouth Beach, NJ 07750

Witch-themed, daytime eatery serving hearty comfort foods & fresh juices, plus Friday night dinners.  Eating breakfast or lunch at this magical eatery has never disappointed a single person I know. I have only heard great things about MKW.

Not too long ago, Cheryl from Bradley Beach mentioned that she had one of the best French onion soups and chicken pot pies she’s ever eaten.

I looked at the menu and couldn’t find the soup. It could be on a specials board or on the Friday Night dinner menu. They also have a grab and go market if you’d rather enjoy your food later in the day at home.

  • Jack's Goal Line Stand - 149 Brighton Ave, Long Branch, NJ 07740

We all love Jack’s at the WRAT. The oven roasted wings, famous ribs, burgers, pizza, and the French onion soup are stars on the menu at JGLS.

The French onion soup is made in house, filled with onions, caramelized to perfection, a touch of brandy, secret spices, a garlic crostini, and a beautiful blend of provolone and Gruyere cheese bubbling perfectly over the crock of soup. Maybe try the special 5 onion blend French onion soup should it pop up on the specials menu.

  • Court Jester Restaurant - 16 E Main St, Freehold, NJ 07728

Last couple of times I was there, I had the mango habanero wings and a juicy patty melt. My friend got the 1/2 a Reuben with French onion soup and garlic bread. After tasting her soup, I made a mental note to get the soup on my next Freehold visit. I also noticed the people next to us ordered pizza that looked fantastic.

  • Barnacle Bill's - 1 1st St, Rumson, NJ 07760

It’s been said countless times that this place has one of the best burgers in New Jersey. I’ve had a burger or 6 from BB’s, and yes they do have amazing burgers, but have you tried the French onion soup?
I have, and it is delicious. It kind of reminds me of the French onion soup I made last Winter. I think it has a touch of sherry if I’m not mistaken. I need to go back and give it another go. By the way, their fried oysters are to die for.

  • D'Arcy's Tavern - 310 Main St, Bradley Beach, NJ 07720

There’s so much to love about D’Arcy’s. It’s not typical pub food. It’s pub food elevated to a heavenly level.

You must start by ordering the artichoke fries with lemon aioli. Then if you’re lucky, you’ll show up on a night they have their special  crock of the beefy 5 onion with short ribs, croutons, and a heaping helping of melted Swiss cheese. My dream is to have this soup some day soon. People who work down the street here in Belmar mentioned it yesterday and I just had to include it on this list.  Last time I was here I had a truffle mac and cheese that blew me away.

  • Belford Bistro - 870 Main St, Belford, NJ 07718

This place books up quickly, so make sure you plan way in advance before you head to Belford. They have their own special recipe for French onion soup. They add Spanish sherry and top the slices of crusty baguette with melted Comte. Comte cheese is to the French what Cheddar is to the English. It’s a cow’s milk cheese that strongly resembles Gruyere in texture and taste. They don’t overload the crock with comte. They melt it on to the bread and gently place it in the soup.

This hidden gem tucked away in a strip mall looks like a nice place to enjoy dinner or lunch with friends and family.

  • Maloney's Pub & Grill - 119 Main St, Matawan, NJ 07747

This place is known by friends, colleagues, and the locals as the place that has more than 100 rotating craft & imported beers on tap. They also have the best French onion soup in Matawan according to listeners Jerry & Phil.

It’s made with tons of caramelized onions in a rich broth with a blend of melted Swiss, mozzarella, and provolone cheeses. Like any good pub, Maloney’s has some killer burgers and bangin’ wings. Eat up. drink up, and grab a crock of French onion soup at Maloney’s before they run out.
