On October 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy made landfall marking it the costliest disaster in Garden State history. The category 3 hurricane also known as “Superstorm Sandy” devastated the East Coast with it especially taking a tremendous toll on New Jersey and the Jersey Shore.
The Department of Environmental Protection‘s data revealed that 346,000 homes were either damaged or destroyed in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, 2 million people lost power, and 38 lives were lost. This totaled up to $30 billion in economic damage for the state of New Jersey.
Now, ten years later, we are looking back at what some are still recovering from to this day in the year 2022. The destruction of Hurricane Sandy sustained 80 mph winds, a record-breaking storm surge, and even swept away some of the most famed landmarks in the state.
No matter where you were that day, what grade you were in, what job you had, or how old you were, everyone has a story to tell. And although the photos below were taken ten years ago, they will never get easier to look at.
