Two Bergen County Teens Launch Christmas Gift Drive for HIV Group Home Residents
Two local teens, Julianna Truberg and Emma Marrero, began gathering Christmas gifts for the men living at Harrison House, a Paramus group home helping those with HIV. The teens made a video asking for donations through Amazon wish lists and Venmo.
Their gift list includes everyday essentials, clothes, gift cards, and personal hygiene items for the seven residents. “It’s a place that should bring hope to people to help them learn how to live with this terrible disease,” Julianna said.
After helping in the kitchen at the facility through St. Anne’s Church in Fair Lawn this fall, the girls were inspired to do more. For over 25 years, church members have prepared meals for those staying at Harrison House.
The group home is nestled at 230 East Ridgewood Ave. in Paramus, on Bergen New Bridge Medical Center grounds. More than 95 people with HIV/AIDS have found help here since it opened in 1992. A house manager oversees daily operations.
The residents check in with medical case managers monthly, working gradually toward living independently. Each night, the Catholic AIDS Network delivers dinner.
Money comes from Bergen County and Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS grants to cover living expenses. Buddies of New Jersey Inc. manages the program, which changed from its original hospice purpose.
As presents arrive daily, the girls take time wrapping each one carefully. Their social media posts got quick community support, bringing holiday joy to residents this December. Beyond holiday giving, the home provides important health services all year. New residents can apply through [email protected]. Staff help build skills so each person can succeed on their own.
Local faith groups help throughout the year. During holidays, the Catholic AIDS Network increases its help with special gift programs alongside regular meal delivery from area groups.
