Steve Carell Weighs In On New ‘The Office’ Spin-Off Series
Steve Carell weighs in on the news of the new The Office spin-off series that is in the works. As star of the beloved, award-winning US series, Carell played Michael Scott, regional manager of the Dunder Mifflin Scranton Branch. Carell’s Scott has good intentions for his employees, but his attempts at humor (and his incompetence) often offend and annoy his coworkers, often drawing reprimands from his superiors.
The nine-season series received significant acclaim, winning several awards, including a Peabody Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, a Golden Globe Award for Carell’s performance, and four Primetime Emmy Awards, including one for Outstanding Comedy Series, in 2006. Carell departed in season seven after NBC didn’t renew his contract. During his tenure at The Office, Carell has also served as producer, executive producer, writer, and director.
Steve Carell Weighs In
During the premiere of his new film IF Monday night (May 13), Carell told The Hollywood Reporter that he will be supporting the spin-off. He said, “I will be watching, but I will not be showing up. It’s just a new thing, and there’s really no reason for my character to show up in something like that.”
Though fans might be sad there won’t be any cameos by Carell, he did express his excitement about the new series. “I love the idea — I guess it’s set in a failing newspaper company.” Carell, 61, worked with lead actor Domhnall Gleeson (Ex Machina) in Hulu’s 2022 thriller limited series, The Patient. Carell called Gleeson an “excellent actor and a super nice guy,” so he thinks the upcoming series will be “great.”
The new, unnamed series will be set in the universe of Dunder Mifflin and introduce a new cast of characters. Centered on a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and followed by the same documentary crew from The Office, the show will feature Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus) leading the ensemble cast. Peacock is set to take on the series more than ten years after The Office came to an end in 2013.
Carell Has His Own The Office Reunion
Though he will not be appearing in the new show, Carell reunited with The Office co-star John Krasinski on the family film IF, which Krasinski served as writer and director, while Carell voiced the film’s lead Imaginary Friend, Blue.
Since Krasinski also directed some episodes of The Office, Carell felt familiar with him as a director and called him a great director. “He’s very thorough, he’s smart and he knows how to work with actors because he is one,” Carell said of the A Quiet Place filmmaker. Carell sweetly added that he “jumped” at the chance to work with Krasinski again, “partly just to be with him. He’s a good friend and I hadn’t seen him in a while so it was nice to catch up.”
