I never knew how much I loved Thai food until I moved to New Jersey. I had already lived here for over 15 years before I found a handful of good Thai restaurants.
I was living in Monmouth County at the time, and my friend, Steve, told me about the Bangkok House on Route 35 in Eatontown.
My husband had never had Thai food in his life and was reluctant to try it because he had heard it was very spicy.
I had assured him that the restaurant would adjust the spiciness according to his request. Any Thai restaurant, or any restaurant for that matter, should always accommodate reasonable customer requests.
He saw Chicken Pad Thai on the menu and his eyes lit up. He was intrigued by some of the ingredients. The peanuts in the dish were the first ingredient that raised his interest.
He ordered Chicken Pad Thai and told our server to keep it mild.
I am more adventurous; I’ll eat hot and spicy food as long as my taste buds remain intact.
When I first started working at the WRAT, one of my friends and colleagues, Steve Hook, would often talk about living in Thailand.
His father was a Colonel in the United States Air Force, and he was stationed there back in the late 60’s, so Steve got to eat quite a bit of authentic Thai cuisine, and as a small child, he developed a palate that could withstand extremely spicy food.
Back in the late 90’s, Steve proposed a hot sauce challenge live on the air. He had a couple of ass blasting hot sauces and the end game was to see which one of us could go the longest without either passing out or grabbing the nearest glass of milk.
I’d like to believe it was a tie, but I humbly admit that Steve took the crown. I may have lasted a minute before I could no longer feel my mouth. I still like most spicy cuisine, and I still order my Thai food medium heat.
