I have a handful of favorite pages on social media, one of them is “South Jersey Food Scene” on Facebook.

I love the way it’s run. No negative comments are allowed, only positive reviews will do.
I feel the same way when I write about food. I am looking to give local businesses a boost, not tear them down.
If I don’t like a place, you’ll never know it unless you’re a close friend, co-worker, or a family member.

If you have something negative to say about a business, go to Google Reviews or Yelp.

As a public figure, I don’t think it’s necessary to trash a place because I had a bad experience or 2. I am not a food critic!
I almost always give a place a second chance and if nothing has improved, I just won’t go back.

Since it’s soup weather, I decided to scour the South Jersey Food Scene page to see where South Jersey folks go to find a fantastic bowl of soup.

It could be a local deli, a Chinese restaurant, a favorite eatery, or places that are known exclusively for their soups.

This is my favorite time of year to travel around the state of New Jersey to explore places I’ve never been to that serve comfort food.

Soups, stews, bisques, chowders, and several other soul warming dishes are on my search list.

The South Jersey Food Scene folks are very passionate about their food finds and are very vocal when they find something they believe the rest of us need to know about. I appreciate that.

I appreciate everyone on all the food pages I follow. In some bizarre way, some of these people are like family to me.

Let’s take a look at the places South Jersey goes, to find a comforting bowl of soup.

  • Ragazzi - 44 Rte 70 W, Marlton, NJ 08053

Located in the Marlton Greene Shopping Center, Ragazzi is an Italian BYOB eatery known for their house made soups, pasta & pizza. Terri & Bob from SJFS had good things to say about Ragazzi. Terri mentioned that they have 5 to 6 soup choices each day. It could be Chicken Pastina, Cream of Broccoli, Pasta Fagioli, Chili, or even the gluten free Vegetable soup.

  • Olga's Diner - 200 NJ-73, Marlton, NJ 08053

Pretty famous for their French onion soup. Kathy and Gale from the SJFS love it. They have a rotation of soups on the menu, and they even have vegan options.  For Instance, Sunday’s soup choices are: Cream of Turkey or Italian Wedding Soup. Monday: Bean Soup, Tuesday: Chef’s Choice, Wednesday: Beef Barley, or Lentil, Thursday: Split Pea, Friday: Seafood, and Saturday: Chef’s Choice.

  • The Kibitz Room - 100 Springdale Rd, Cherry Hill, NJ 08003

This place is on my bucket list. Stacked meat sandwiches & other Jewish deli classics in a no-frills, order-at-the-counter setting.  I grew up eating vats of my grandmother’s Chicken Matzo Ball soup.  The Kibitz Room offers, Chicken Matzo Ball, Mushroom Barley, Cabbage, Split Pea, Chicken Noodle,  and Vegetable. For an additional charge, you can order Kreplach ( Jewish Wontons). They also offer quarts and pints to go.

  • The Soup Bar - 307 W Broad St, Palmyra, NJ 08065

I want to thank Judy for the heads up on The Soup Bar. In case you’re unfamiliar with this place, they serve more than just soup.  If you’re not sure what kind of soup to order, they offer soup flights, I love that!

Crab Bisque, Cream Of Wild Mushroom, Chicken Noodle, Chicken Pot Pie, Split Pea with Ham, Fire Roasted Tomato, Sausage & Shrimp Gumbo, and list goes on. This is definitely going on my food tour list.

    THE SOUP BAR

Come back to old-fashioned basics for a meal to remember!

  • Simply Soups & A Little More - 301 E Atlantic Ave, Audubon, NJ 08106

This cash only place has a menu that ranges from old school favorites like Chicken Noodle and Split Pea, to some mind blowing custom soups, like Creamy Pumpkin, & Sweet Potato with caramelized onions and pecans. Every day there are several choices of soups to choose from. I am comforted just knowing that.

Time-tested recipes that will make you want to come back for more!

Every day, you'll find a delicious selection of the soups and more at Simply Soups. We offer a variety of soups daily; check out our soup schedule to see what we're serving today!

  • The Kettle & Grille - 230 N Maple Ave, Marlton, NJ 08053

Marlton is a popular town for good eats. The Kettle & Grille is a casual American eatery and according to Tracy and a few other folks, they make some really good soup. All soups are homemade and come with crackers. They have a rotating list of soups each day. The menu doesn’t give specifics, so I had to do a little investigative work.  Avgolemono seems to be a very popular soup. It’s one of my favorites. It’s a Greek Chicken soup made with egg yolks, chicken broth, and lemons. I like mine with rice added.  The Cream of Vegetable was mentioned as was the French Onion soup, Chicken Noodle, and Chicken Matzo Ball.  If I ever make my way to this place, it’ll be for the Avgolemono soup.

  • Rai Rai Ramen - 1200 S Church St, Mt Laurel Township, NJ 08054

It should be called, “Ra Ra Ramen” based on the cheering squad that showed up to recommend this place. I love a big bowl of ramen steeped in a flavorful broth and all that comes with this bowl of comfort. Noodles, eggs, a variety of proteins, bean sprouts, vegetables, I love it all. I see the rib eye steak ramen is a popular choice, but I can’t stop at the ramen after perusing the online menu. The Chicken Katsu Curry with Rice and the Pork Buns look delicious!

  • O'Connor's American Bar & Grille - 1383 Monmouth Rd, Eastampton Township, NJ 08060

Vivian loves their homemade soups. The French Onion looks to be quite popular with all it’s cheesy goodness of the provolone and mozzarella blend.  They offer Crab Bisque, Chili, as well as the Soup Of The Day. I also love the burger menu. Most bars and pubs offer good comfort food and that’s a good thing.

  • Ponzio's - 7 NJ-70, Cherry Hill, NJ 08034

I’ve been here before, and I enjoyed my meals and the baked goods I took home. The cheese rolls are legendary. Snapper soup, Cream of Chicken, Beef Barley, Chicken Orzo, Cream of Pumpkin and I’m sure plenty of others. You’ll have to call ahead to find out which soups are available that day.  Thursday is Pot Pie Day!!

  • Sang Kee Noodle Cafe - 1601 Kings Hwy N, Cherry Hill, NJ 08034

Eileen mentioned that the Roast Pork Noodle soup was one of her favorites.  I just saw a photo of that soup and I’m all in.

Someone else mentioned the Shrimp Dumpling Noodle soup and how good it was. There’s Braised Beef Noodle soup and a soup I’d love to try, Grilled Lemon Grass Chicken Egg Noodle Soup w/Vegetables.
