NEW YORK, NY - APRIL 16: A cheese pizza pie at Cassiana's Pizza at 56th Street and 3rd Ave, on April 16, 2020, in New York City. Cassiana's Pizza has continued to operate during the pandemic as other restaurants in the neighborhood have closed their doors. New York State Gov. Andrew Cuomo during his daily Covid-19 update stated the New York on PAUSE will be extended until May 15th. The governor also shared plans to allow business to reopen in what he is calling a phased priority scale which will be based on the risk of the business has on the pandemic. Who makes the best pizza in New Jersey? That question will deliver a variety of answers. Like music, the topic of great pizza is subjective.  Then there’s your choice of crust. Which is the best? Thin crust, Sicilian, Neapolitan…etc.

A man named Guy Madsen from North Jersey started a Facebook group called “Jersey Joints” early on in the pandemic to get away from all the politics floating around on social media. He says, “It started with just a few friends but has since grown to more than 55,000 members”.

  • The constant debate on who has the best pizza spawned the first ever Pizza Bowl that took place in 2020 at Redd's Biergarten in New Brunswick.

The success of that event led to Pizza Bowl 2 also at at the Meadowlands last Sunday February 6, 2022 which drew hundreds of people.

  • Jersey Pizza Joints members nominated pizzerias from around the state and voting took place online starting in the fall, narrowing the field to four in each region — North Jersey, Central Jersey, South Jersey, and the Jersey Shore.

The event lasted over six hours and involved 220 judges over five rounds of pizza consumption.

  • The champion of this huge event? Our friends on the Jersey Shore, Maruca’s of Seaside Heights, they’ve been tossing pies for 72 years!

How appropriate for today . It was great meeting everyone at Pizza Bowl 2. Thanks to Guy Madsen ,Jersey Pizza Joints and Johnny Cthepizzaguy for capturing all the great pizza joints who competed.

“PizzaBowl 2 was an amazing experience,” Madsen wrote in the group page. “Every finalist was so deserving to be competing for the Pizza Bowl Trophy.”

  • With Pizza Bowl 2 complete, the debates about who has the best pizza will continue.

Another way to duke it out for the best pizza here on the Jersey Shore is by voting in the WRAT’S SHORE AWARDS.
