Burgers are one of America’s favorite foods. I don’t think I know a single meat eater who doesn’t like a nice juicy hamburger.

A burger start out as a blank canvas. Some burger lovers like to add their favorite cheese, additional meats such as bacon, pork roll, ham, and a variety of other proteins.
Then there are the veggies, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions…etc
We can’t discount the condiments, ketchup, mayo, mustard, barbeque sauce, and so on.

I am always up for the challenge of trying some crazy chef’s idea of an insane, over top creation.

I came across a few people who were adamant that a good burger needs to shine on it’s own, suggesting to leave off all of those toppings that muddle the meat’s flavor . The burger itself should be the star of the show. While I don’t completely disagree, sometimes I just have to try something out of the ordinary. To each their own my burger loving friends.

While searching out the burger loving Jersey folks on the web regarding the most ridiculously over the top burger creations, I received more responses than I anticipated. The response was as massive as some of the burgers that were suggested. This is going to be some journey.

My radio station mainly serves Monmouth and Ocean Counties, so I was originally going to concentrate on finding places that serve these Frankenstein type burgers closer to home. At the last minute, I decided to expand the list to include places outside of our home counties due to the overwhelming response. Jersey REALLY LOVES their burgers!

Most people mentioned burgers made with beef, but I don’t think I can leave out burgers that are made with turkey, veal, pork, plant proteins, and other non- traditional proteins. There needs to be something for everyone on choose from on this list.

Who doesn’t love to venture out on a fun road trip in search of a huge juicy burger on an early Saturday or Sunday afternoon?
I figure you can fit in a little sightseeing, maybe some shopping, and squeezing in a long walk after consuming all of those calories.

  • Smokies Craft BBQ - 333 Atlantic City Blvd, Bayville, NJ 08721

Smokie’s creations qualify as over the top. For instance, “The Rancher” is a smash burger topped with sliced brisket, onion rings, Smokie’s Bama White, or burger sauce, and your choice of cheese.

  • Carr High Cafe - 49 Carr Ave, Keansburg, NJ 07734

How is it that I’ve never heard of this place? Thanks to Rich M. for the introduction. If you’re among the millions of Americans who are gluten free , then this place should be your next stop. Owner, Bryan Morales wants everyone to enjoy his burgers. Low carbers can enjoy a meal here as well.

According to Best Of New Jersey: Carr High Cafe has a separate fryer for its gluten-free fare, ensuring the food is safe. This includes menu items such as gluten-free fried chicken, mozzarella sticks, and French fries. In addition, they serve Smart buns courtesy of Smart Baking Company which are low carb and keto friendly. Even the pizzas and quesadillas use low-carb crust and tortillas. They also sell gluten-free toasted pastries that resemble Pop-Tarts.

Now on with the burger show. There are a few that qualify as over top, but I’m going to zero in on “The Cran Turkey Burger” –   a turkey burger topped with cranberry chutney, loads of bacon, and creamy brie cheese, Then there’s the “Loco Moco” -1/3 lb beef patty on a bed of white rice topped w/ sautéed onions, mushrooms, gravy & fried egg. Sounds kind of like an egg foo young burger. If I had to choose from their list of burger creations, it would be the”More Bacon Burger.”  Just look at this photo!

  • Shut Up and Eat - 804 Main St, Toms River, NJ 08753

Shut up and Eat has quite a few over the top burgers, but the “Elvis Burger” is probably the most extreme. Peanut butter, bacon, and fried bananas. How’s that for over the top? I also found a burger on Instagram at Shut Up and Eat called, ‘The HondaPro Burger’ it’s a 1/2 lb hamburger with-a full banana, Cap’n Crunch cereal and peanut butter on a Chocolate waffle . Insanity on  a plate.

  • The Speakeatery - 705 Cookman Ave, Asbury Park, NJ 07712

Practically everything here could qualify as over the top. The sandwich crafters here are from another planet. Creative minds create otherworldly food. Take the “Down N’ Out Burger” – The East Coast’s answer to the In & Out Burger. House seasoned burger patties, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, grilled onions, pickles, and our special sauce served on a round roll, with fries. Your choice of a single, double, triple, or quad patty.

  • Burger 25 - 199 NJ-37 East, Toms River, NJ 08753

Another place where you can get just about any burger your creative mind desires. The Reef & Beef is: an Angus patty with melted Pepper Jack, Crispy Rock Shrimp, tossed in  Xina’s Spicy Gochujang sauce, between a fluffy Martin’s Potato Bun. My favorite; The Lamb Burger with Feta, Tzatziki, and all the good things that qualify as a burger fit for a Greek Goddess. Not sure it’s still on the menu.

  • The Galley - 1313 Memorial Dr, Asbury Park, NJ 07712

The Galley’s Lobster Burger is one of many that me and my favorite Jersey foodies consider extreme. It’s a 10 ounce Pat LaFrieda Patty, Fresh Lobster Claws, House Made Cheddar Sauce, Lettuce, and Garlic Aioli on a beautiful Brioche Bun. Then there’s the Galley OG– a 10 ounce Pat LaFreida patty, Aged White Cheddar, Roasted Long Hots, Roasted Red Onion, Lettuce, and Garlic Aioli on  a Brioche Bun. Go Get Your Galley on!

  • Steve's Burgers - 506 US-46, Garfield, NJ 07026

Many raised their hands for Steve’s. Steve’s Burger is a big seller. It’s a Beef Burger with Cheese, Onion Rings, Lettuce,Tomato, and Steve’s Special Sauce. It doesn’t sound odd, but the thing is huge. The Y.D.K.J. Burger came up several times. It features that controversial meat North Jersey calls Taylor Ham.

  • Ho-Ho-Kus Inn & Tavern - 1 E Franklin Turnpike, Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ 07423

A Bergen County  favorite with burgers and other American fare served in a circa-1790 landmark with multiple dining rooms, a bar & patio. They have a burger called the S.P.B.B. – It’s a burger with Peanut Butter, Bacon, and Sriracha. They offer plant protein burgers and a crazy breakfast burger too. Crazy combo fries and knock out onion rings.

  • Hailey's Harp & Pub - 400 Main St, Metuchen, NJ 08840

  • Prospector's Steakhouse & Saloon - 3050 NJ-38, Mt Laurel Township, NJ 08054

Restaurant with a cowboy vibe offering steaks & burgers plus music in a dance hall & on a patio. Thanks to Cheryl H. for the suggestion. This sounds like a fun place and they have a salad bar. They have gigantic burgers at this cowboy, wild West themed place. The 3 Cheese & Bacon Burger tickles my fancy. It’s a fresh Angus Beef Burger topped  with Mayo, Thousand Island dressing, Swiss, Cheddar, Pepper jack cheese and bacon strips. Also looking at their huge Patty Melt: Certified Angus Beef Patty topped with Grilled Onions, Cheddar and Swiss cheese, Served on toasted twelve grain bread.

  • Gouldsburger’s - 109 Kings Hwy E, Haddonfield, NJ 08033

Andra H. shouted out Gouldsburgers for some over the top creations. They start with fresh baked bread and then, the sky’s the limit because they allow you to create your own work of eating art, should you decide their signature burgers aren’t insane enough for you. I took a look at the menu, and it all looks good. I zeroed in on the Forager Melt – Caramelized Onions, Roasted Mushrooms,Swiss Cheese, Truffle Aioli. Served on Griddled House-Made Pullman Bread.

  • Clinton Station Diner - 2 Bank St, Clinton, NJ 08809

I wasn’t going to include any diners on this list, as I feel the diner burger deserves it’s own exclusive category. Aaron C. changed my mind. Aaron introduced me to some of the most extreme, over the top burgers that come from the grill at Clinton Station Diner. This diner is famous for their Burger Challenges. For instance,

If you and 9 friends can finish the “8th Wonder” (105 lbs total) in 1 hour we’ll give you $2,000! That contest must be between 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. and must be witnessed by CSD management.

  • Outlaw's Burger Barn & Creamery - 1370 S Main Rd, Vineland, NJ 08360

South Jersey goes nuts for this place. It was one of the most suggested places in my poll. The Smokehouse Burger and the Outlaw Fries topped the list of mentions. Smokehouse Burger has Crisp bacon, house pickled jalapeno, white Cheddar, crispy onion rings, house made BBQ. The flavor of the meat, the size of the burger, and the ridiculous amount of suggestion will guide me towards this must visit burger joint.

  • Kid Rip's Tap & Tavern - 115 S Black Horse Pike, Runnemede, NJ 08078

Kid Rips was suggested nearly as much as Outlaw’s Burger Barn. The people on the South Jersey Food Scene know good food and where to find it. They make an Elk Burger that gets rave reviews. It’s 7ounces of tender, freshly ground Elk, topped w/ black cherry onion jam & smoked gouda cheese on a toasted brioche bun w/ house chips They also have a veggie burger that even carnivores like.
Their Mushroom Cheese Burger is ranked one of the top 25 burgers in South Jersey. It’s an 8oz patty smashed on the grill, topped with Swiss cheese, a medley of sautéed mushrooms in a Port Wine reduction on a brioche bun, served with house cut chips

  • Tony Beef - 195 S New York Rd, Galloway, NJ 08205 & 17 Bethel Rd, Somers Point, NJ 08244

Now this could be a contender for one of the best over the top burger joints in Jersey. They occasionally serve other proteins on a limited basis. From time to time you can get a nice lean bison burger, or Elk, or alligator. Call ahead to see what’s available. Beef, chicken and black bean burgers are available on a daily basis.
