EPA crews are working to identify the chemicals inside abandoned barrels at a former chemical plant on Marl Road. EPA crews were working carefully Sunday evening at the site near the Farmingdale-Howell border. NBC New York reports, it's not clear how safe it is to move the barrels.
The plant has long been shut down but earlier this year, the property's new owner burned some barrels in an old incinerator and fumes drifted into nearby communities. The EPA says residents must be ready to leave at any time in the event of a chemical fire.
Of major concern is that the Howell High and Middle Schools aren't far from the location as the bird flies..
Local residents are encouraged to sign up for local direct messaging from the EPA.

Primary election season is beginning
County clerks have begun sending out some 900-thousand mail-in ballots to voters across New Jersey -- which, unofficially, begins the primary season in the Garden State. Ballots could start landing in mailboxes by today or tomorrow. Those on the vote-by-mail list or absentee voters can return their ballots by mail or by dropping ballots in a vote-by-mail dropbox. Early in-person voting is scheduled for June 2nd to the 4th. Election Day is June 6th.
