The Morning Rat Race

MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA - OCTOBER 08: Daniel Jones #8 of the New York Giants leaves the field after an injury against the Miami Dolphins during the fourth quarter at Hard Rock Stadium on October 08, 2023 in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Good morning, Sports fans!  Davey Mac here with an excellent and exciting Sports Report for ya!  We’ve got a member of the Knicks setting a franchise record!  Hockey matchups for tonight!  An update on the Shohei Ohtani gambling scandal story!  But first…

…Daniel Jones’ days as the quarterback of the New York Football Giants may be numbered.  If D.J. was paying attention to the owner’s comments yesterday…things sounded ominous for Number 8.

Dallas Cowboys v New York Giants

EAST RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY – SEPTEMBER 10: Daniel Jones #8 of the New York Giants looks on during the first quarter against the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium on September 10, 2023 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

And that’s because Giants principal owner John Mara says that if general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll want a quarterback in the first round…he thinks they should go for the QB.  “If they fall in love with a quarterback and believe that it’s worth pick No. 6 or moving up, I certainly would support that,” Mara said.

Carolina Panthers v New York Giants

EAST RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY – AUGUST 18: John K. Mara, owner and CEO of the New York Giants looks on before pre-season football game against the Carolina Panthers at MetLife Stadium on August 18, 2023 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The question is: who should the G-Men draft if they are indeed looking at making a change at quarterback?  My guess: Michigan University’s J.J. McCarthy.  With the Chicago Bears having the Number One pick, most seem to think that it is inevitable that they select USC’s Caleb Williams.  But McCarthy, coming off of winning a National Championship with the Wolverines, has gotten lots of buzz lately.  Scouts are high on his athleticism and leadership qualities.

2024 CFP National Championship - Michigan v Washington

HOUSTON, TEXAS – JANUARY 08: J.J. McCarthy #9 of the Michigan Wolverines celebrates after defeating the Washington Huskies during the 2024 CFP National Championship game at NRG Stadium on January 08, 2024 in Houston, Texas. Michigan defeated Washington 34-13.

The bottom line is that Joe Schoen has a lot to think about.  Is it time for the Giants G.M. to turn the page on Daniel?  We’ll soon found out!  I’m Davey Mac…now on to the rest of the Sports Report!
