I’m not Homer Simpson when it comes to donuts. I like donuts, but I’d never eat just any donuts.

I’m not a donut snob or anything, I just don’t love them enough to eat them on a regular basis, unless I come across an exceptional donut, or at least a really, really good donut. Introduce me to a baker who makes incredible donuts and my glass of milk will be poured before the donut box is open.

If I had to guess, I probably eat a tad more than a dozen or so in a year.

I remember the Simpson’s episode where Homer Simpson is sitting at the controls of the nuclear power plant talking to himself out loud, saying, “I’d sell my soul for a donut?”

Then his nemesis, Flanders, appears in the doorway as the devil with a contract and hot pen in hand and offers Homer a donut for his soul.

Homer signs the contract and then a creature appears out of thin air wearing an apron that says, Hell’s Kitchen.” The creature is holding a tray, and under the cloche is the donut Homer desires.

It’s Homer’s typical pink frosted donut with sprinkles. For me, it’s hardly worth selling one’s soul for.

Flanders states to Homer, “The instant you finish it, I own your soul.” Homer already shoving the confection down his throat, stops before his very last bite and says, “Hey, wait, if I don’t finish this last bite, you don’t get my soul, do you?” The devil responds, “technically, no.”

Does Homer at some point eat that last bite?” You’ll have to watch that Tree House of Horror episode on YouTube.

I know that there are some amazing donut shops here on the Jersey Shore, but are any of them worth selling your soul for?

Here’s Part 2 of the list based on comments I found on several message boards, and food sites run by regular folks who tell us where the really good donuts can be found in Monmouth, Ocean, and beyond.

  • Chubby Unicorn Donut Shop - 271 Atlantic City Blvd, Bayville, NJ 08721

What a great name for a donut shop, or any shop. The name stands out and it piques curiosity. The logo is adorable and the donuts are as magical as unicorns are. Chubby Unicorn logo
Inventive minds run this place. Donuts can be made to order for birthdays, anniversaries, graduations…etc

Be on the lookout for seasonal goodies. The reindeer donuts they make during Christmas are almost too cute to eat.

You can grab one of their freshly made donuts with nice cup of coffee and grab a frozen yogurt on your way out.

  • Plainfield Donut Shop and Luncheonette - 131 Watchung Ave, Plainfield, NJ 07060

Food writer Peter Genovese says this donut shop has the Best Jelly Donuts in the state!  This place has a small town feel to it. I love a place with an old fashioned vibe that takes you back to a time when things were simple.

  • Shore Good Donuts - 14 S Bay Ave, Beach Haven, NJ 08008

Rebecca M. gave this stellar review:

Fresh, hot donuts made to order!? I’m in sugary sweet heaven! I’m surprised my family only ordered a dozen of the most popular items.  Maple bacon (maple n bake), lemon drop, French toast, inside out Boston cream, and strawberry glazed are just some that were ordered (and completely enjoyed with a morning cup of coffee sitting on the porch swing!) This place is a must try if you are on LBI.”

These are old fashioned donuts made with a modern twist. Owners, Todd & Rich are plumbers by trade. These gents turned a casual conversation and a great idea about donut shops into a dream.

According to the website: Growing up and working in Long Beach Island, Todd and Rich noticed one thing missing in such a well-rounded beach town: a specialty donuts shop.

The idea stayed tucked in their back pocket until 2011, when the opportunity to open their own old fashioned donut shop presented itself. Through a mix of great ideas, hard work and a sprinkle of good timing Shore Good Donuts was finally born.

  • Chester's Pastry Pantry Bakery - 506 New Rd, Somers Point, NJ 08244

Sticky buns, cinnamon buns, cheesecake, Danish, and of course the star of the show, the donuts. For over 60 year’s Chester’s has been serving up baked goods to happy customers.  These donut are worth taking the day off from your diet. The jelly donuts are over-filled and a delight to eat. Same for the Boston Cream donuts.

Visit this small, non-pretentious bakery and feel good knowing that everything is baked with joy.

  • Top That! Donuts - : 210 Ocean Ave N, Point Pleasant Beach, NJ 08742

Ocean Avenue is a lot sweeter, thanks to Top That! Donuts. I’ve seen reviews that said this place is like a locally owned version of Duck Donuts, a franchise shop with over 100 locations across the U.S.

At Top That, you make your donut selections and then they promptly get made by hand right in front of your very eyes.

The result: a warm delicious variety of donuts.  The place is a favorite of locals and tourists, and it’s family owned and operated.  Top That!
