SPRING LAKE, NEW JERSEY - MARCH 17: Spring Lake resident Michael Callahan walks through the town playing bagpipes on St. Patrick's Day March 17, 2021 in Spring Lake, New Jersey. The nickname “The Irish Riviera” dates back to before the shore towns of Spring Lake and Belmar were settled by a heavy demographic of Irish-Americans. Many shore towns display Irish pride on St. Patrick's Day, despite the fact that most of the parades have been cancelled for the second year in a row due to COVID-19.      This part of the list was actually the genesis of the whole idea for local places we miss at the Jersey Shore, and this is how it happened.

We were in the office sitting around the water cooler.. Ok, we don’t have a water cooler or even seats in the kitchen area at the radio station, but it beats saying “we were at the toaster oven”.  Anyway, the subject of the Beach Haus Brewery in Belmar came up, and suddenly someone said “Oh my gosh, I would love a buttered roll from Freedman’s Bakery right now!”. Then I said “Or a cheesesteak!”.. Next thing you know the three of us were in a full blow gastronomic trip down memory lane about Freedman’s Bakery, which used to stand for decades on the footprint now occupied by the brewery. That in turn spiraled into memories of other places we used to enjoy in town, and around the shore.

So here we are. I am calling this part of our memory tour “cool shops”. Some had food, some had memorabilia. Others had, well, just about anything.

They are all gone, and yes, they are all missed. I hope you like me will fondly remember at least one of these places, and as I said about the last list, please feel free to add your memories to mine. This one was a bit harder to generate in the old memory banks for sure. Mostly due to the fact that it’s not just bars, or restaurants, and so on. I had to run through multiple brick and mortars, trying to remember what stood out for me personally. I think two things about this list. One, I did a pretty good job with the six I came up with, at least from a personal perspective, and two, I know I missed a lot more than I remembered!

  • Freedman's Bakery 803 Main Street Belmar

Serving the community from 1950 until it closed it’s doors in 2014, this place was awesome! Fresh rolls, pastries, coffee, and the best damn cheesesteak in town! As mentioned above it is now home to the very popular Beach Haus Brewery.

  • Circle Factory Outlet Center/Peddler's Village 1407 Atlantic Ave, Manasquan

Now an abandoned shell of itself, this place was home to some great stores from the 50’s right up through 2017, in all it’s different incarnations. Just passing by it over the weekend, my wife mentioned she used to buy her underwear at the Hanes store! TMI?  Anyhow, Bass, Izod, Jockey, Harry & David’s, and so much more was found at this once legendary shopping locale just off the Manasquan Circle.

  • Compact Disc World 178 Route 35 Eatontown

I can’t count the amount of bands we had perform and do signings at this cherished memory. I think this Insta post says it all…

  • The Brick General Store 451 Brick Boulevard Brick

This place was so much fun to go in and just lose yourself. From clothes to candy to nick nacks. Great bbq accessories, and even hot sauces! I remember the Saturday morning I was in there and overheard the owner talking about selling. It became a 6th Ave Appliance store for about a year or so and is now the very popular Goodwill Store.

  • Hell's Kitchen Hot Sauce Shop Main Street Belmar

As best as I and our buddy Doug The Promo Rat can recall, Hells Kitchen was located around where the Flames Brazilian Steakhouse is now located at 1000 Main Street. We could be wrong, since at this time there are very few reminders on the interwebs about this legendary hot sauce place, that was way way wayyyyy ahead of it’s time. They had some evil stuff back in the 90’s in that store. First time I ever tried Dave’s insanity sauce was there. they would even make burritos behind the counter on a hot plate!! Insane and one of my fondest memories of the early days of Rat Radio.
