Best Places For Fried Chicken In New Jersey.

I LOVE fried chicken! If I had a choice for a “Last meal”, fried chicken would be at the top of my list. I’ve made fried chicken a few times in my life, but not enough to claim a blue ribbon or any kind of award at all.

Making great fried chicken and getting it just right, is a long, arduous process. Buttermilk marinade, figuring out the perfect spice blend, the perfect choices of coating, the perfect cooking temperature and the perfect cooking time are absolutely key to creating a memorable plate of fried chicken.

I’ve eaten some amazing fried chicken here in New Jersey. Jameson’s Southern Cooking in Neptune City was the first place I had fried chicken when I moved here in 1996 and is hands down one of the best I’ve had since. Their ribs, mac and cheese, and their perfectly seasoned collard greens are hard to beat.

5 Jersey Shore Places Featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives

I love a good crispy coating, the kind where the people across the street can hear the crunch when you take your first bite. It can’t be too greasy or under seasoned. Outside of Jameson’s, where does one find the perfect fried chicken in New Jersey?

I put the word out to those who love fried chicken as much as I do. The passionate food-loving crews on the internet will be our guides to finding fried chicken that you’d eat every time you had a craving.

The first recipe for American-style fried chicken appeared in Hannah Glasse’s ‘The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy‘ in the year 1747. The recipe called for the floured chicken to be fried in lard. Soon, American Southerners started their standard techniques of frying chicken with similar recipes. There is so much history of fried chicken. Too much to include here. Hey, I need to stay on point.

What say you, passionate food crew? See the list below to find out where New Jersey food lovers get what they consider, the best-fried chicken in these parts.

  • Jameson's Southern Cooking - 652 NJ-35, Neptune City, NJ 07753

Founded by United States Marine and Vietnam Veteran, Bob Jameson back in 1994. The fried chicken at Jameson’s Southern Cooking may be the star here, but the ribs are not far behind. The mac and cheese, and the collard greens are my favorite sides, and the banana pudding is the perfect finish to any meal.

  • Claudie's Chicken - 113 Leonardville Rd, Belford, NJ 07718

Fried chicken at a gas station? It worked for Colonel Sanders! Claudie’s used to be on the site of the 76 gas station at the intersection of Cooper Rd on the Red Bank – Middletown border.  They have since moved to another location in Belford. Countless fried chicken lovers on social media told me I must include Claudie’s – a family-owned local restaurant.  Everything is cooked to order and it’s not greasy or tasteless.

  • Blair Mountain Biscuit Co. - 700 S Black Horse Pike, Blackwood, NJ 08012

Matt suggests we travel outside of Monmouth County and head to the Camden County town of Blackwood N.J. to sink our teeth into a place where the biscuits are the star. Hmmm…Matt swears that fried chicken should be the co-star of this food feature. I just looked at the menu and decided that a road trip is in order.

  • Chicken Holiday - 3316 Sunset Ave. • Wanamassa, NJ. 07712

Good service and very generous portions! The last time I visited was in 2017 when I lived nearby, and they’re still hitting home runs! David was the first of many to suggest this place. Nothing fancy, but still juicy and fresh. In business for over 40 years!

  • New York Fried Chicken - : 66 South St, Freehold, NJ 07728

A self-proclaimed stoner was the first to recommend this place. Do I trust a stoner or someone whose taste buds are not impaired by smoking all that weed? I’m going with Omar’s review. Omar eats food from there as a sober member of society  Omar said: “Food here is delicious. My go-to is the chicken and rice platter which is amazing and fresh which I love most about it. The prices are reasonable, especially for such great-tasting food. I would honestly definitely recommend this to Anyone!”

  • Chicken Galore - 354 Amboy Ave, Woodbridge, NJ 07095

A trip to Woodbridge should include Chicken Galore. The folks that have recommended this place love it. Alex had the best review: “Outstanding service. Best fried chicken in New Jersey! Scott, the owner, treats you like family. He gives you the best bang for your buck and when you’re in the mood for fried chicken this is the best place to go by far!!!”

  • Henri's Hotts Barbeque - 1003 E Black Horse Pike, Hammonton, NJ 08037

Another place I can tell is amazing just by looking at photos online. This chicken looks like it tastes! Another hidden gem that needs to be found by fried chicken and BBQ food lovers. I’ll take a down-home BBQ joint over those fancy schmancy places any day. Henri’s isn’t just fried chicken, it’s super fried chicken. That’s what the menu says, and I believe them.

  • Royal Farms - 1756 NJ-88, Brick Township, NJ 08724

Royal Farms has a reputation for good fried chicken. Royal Farms is another chicken place where you can fill up your tank with gas. There seems to be some sort of cosmic connection with gas stations and fried chicken. There are a a dozen or so other locations throughout New Jersey.

  • Chicken Kitchen - 420 Shrewsbury Plaza, Shrewsbury, NJ 07702

Several friends call this place a favorite to get good fried chicken. It’s well-made food for a decent price. It’s not fast food, give them the time to craft it fresh, it’s worth it.

  • Papa Al's Chicken and Waffles - 286 US-46, Rockaway, NJ 07866

Off to Morris County we go. Those who chose this place say, “There’s nothing at this place that is sub-par.” Keith practically wrote a manifesto:

Finally stopped at Papa Al’s Chicken and Waffles after driving by it for too long. I’m so glad that I did. Not only was the owner really friendly, but informed us of the wait times for everything we would order because it’s MADE FRESH. So we ordered the wings and Waffle combo. Got some corn fritters, fried pickles, and biscuits. It took about ten minutes to get the food after the order was processed and I did not mind the wait for the quality of food that we received.

    1. The chicken was awesome. Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. Good-sized wings. Sauce on the side, I got mango habanero and it was sweet and spicy but not overpowering. I also got Papa Al’s signature sauce which was honey mustard-like chipotle that I dipped enjoying in. So tasty.
    2. But that waffle! Oh my God! the waffle. I would write a song about it. I’m sure it’s got a crazy calorie count, but I didn’t go here looking to watch calories. It was sweet, wonderful vanilla and cinnamon taste, and so buttery. It also had a firm crisp crust and soft center. Perfect with the chicken and sauce. I would go back just for waffles.
    3. The corn fritters were wonderful also. Very flavorful. Full of corn, not just dough. Crispy outside soft center. Perfect size. I could eat an order like ripping through McDonald’s french fries. They would be gone before I knew it. But I was sharing so I held back.
    4. The fried pickles had a snap and nice flavor.
    5. The biscuit was one of the top biscuits I’ve ever eaten. Fluffy, soft inside, crusty top slathered in butter. It was sweet and not dry at all.

They also have fried Oreos and fried Twinkies. Seriously! Check them out. It’s a hidden gem in Rockaway.
