Our tops story of the day: All rise for the new Yankee Captain! Aaron Judge is the new Captain, as everyone expected. Derek Jeter was on hand for the coronation ceremony yesterday. So a nine year 360-million-dollar deal. After a record-breaking season, he’s just the 16th player in franchise history to be named captain. However, in an interview with Susan Woltman afterwards Yankee GM Brian Cashman said that he thinks he’s finished. That Donaldson will remain at 3rd. That’s troubling because, in my humble opinion the OTHER New York baseball team has had a better off season than our Yankees.
That’s right, campers. I said it. I see the numbers and results in an unbiased manner and if I look at this off season, so far, I can clearly see that the New York Mets have not only out spent the New York Yankees but they also out maneuvered the Yankees and did a better job of making their team better than the Yankees did.
How can I say that? Easy.
Here’s the big Yankee signings:
- Aaron Judge, 9 years 360 million
- Carlos Rodon, 162 million
- IKF, 11 million
- Anthony Rizzo, 34 million
What do 3 of those four players have in common? They are re-signings. They were on the team last year when the Yankees failed yet again to get past the Houston Astros and couldn’t make the World Series. Only Rodon is an upgrade; and to the Yankees credit that addition gives the Yankees one of the best starting pitching line-up’s in Major League Baseball.
Here’s the big Mets signings:
- Carlos Correa, 315 million
- Brandon Nimmo, 162 million
- Edwin Diaz, 102 million
- Justin Verlander, 86 million
- Kodai Senga from Japan, 75 million
- Jose Quintana, 26 million
Only 1 of those names is a player who was on the Mets last season and all of them represent upgrades to the Met franchise.
Let’s let the financials talk for a moment:
Yankees (so far) spent: about 560 million bucks. The Mets? They’ve dropped just over 765 million. So, in my opinion, the Yankees still have work to do to not only have a better season than last… but to also step up and be the best in the Big Apple.
Yankees wins last season: 99. Mets wins last season: 101.
So, let me be clear: Cashman, you’re not finished!
Here’s the other big news of our sports morning!
