Today (August 9th) is National Book Lovers Day! To celebrate, we’re highlighting 7 authors from our great state of New Jersey.

Now that we’ve brought this unofficial holiday to your attention, you can put down your smartphone and pick up a good book for an hour or even several (perhaps one written by one of the phenomenal authors below).

While there’s a chance you’ll know most or even all of the names below, their combined catalog has a good read for all ages. Over the years, some of these New Jersey authors’ books have even been adapted into films.

  • 2. George R.R. Martin

    George R.R. Martin was born in Bayonne, New Jersey. He received a B.S. in Journalism from Northwestern University and became a full-time writer in 1979.

    Martin is the author of the series of novels A Song of Ice and Fire, which was adapted into the HBO series Game of Thrones.

    Peter Benchley will always be known for his bestselling suspense novel Jaws. It became a phenomenon once it was adapted into a Steven Spielberg movie in the 70s and sparked an interest in sharks like never before.
