McDaniel’s triumphant picture book Hands Up! recasts a charged phrase as part of a black girl’s everyday life–hands up for a hug, hands up in class, hands up for a high five–before culminating in a moment of resistance and strength at a protest march. Join us in remembering the 56th anniversary of the week when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote his letter from Birmingham Jail while incarcerated for protesting against segregation. We will create a multicolored paper handprint wreath to take home. |
