The facility will provide preventive care, cleanings, and other dental services to low-income residents who lack insurance. Seniors, veterans, and others without coverage will receive treatment under the supervision of licensed volunteer dentists and faculty. Services are free.
"This is more than just a clinic; it's a living classroom that benefits our students and directly serves our community," said David M. Stout, Ph.D., president of Brookdale Community College, in a statement, per Brookdalecc.edu.. "This partnership exemplifies how we can meet both educational and societal needs by thinking collaboratively and creatively."
Students who take Dental Assistant and Dental X-Ray Technician classes will train at the site, getting real experience with patients. Brookdale's upcoming Dental Hygienist program through Continuing and Professional Studies will also put the space to work for student instruction.
Parker Family Health Center, a nonprofit that brings healthcare to uninsured Monmouth County residents, is running the renovation and construction. Workers have finished 75% of the project.
"This clinic is the first of its kind in the state," said Suzy Dyer, CEO of Parker Family Health Center. "It will offer free dental services to those with no insurance, including seniors, veterans, and community members who fall through the cracks of the current system."
Monmouth County Commissioner Director Tom Arnone gave the partnership high marks. The effort widens access to affordable healthcare while building learning opportunities for students who want jobs in the field.
The clinic shows how schools can link instruction with workforce development. Students will assist and train in the facility. They'll gain experience that readies them for employment after graduation.
Donations to support the clinic can be made through parkerfamilyhealthcenter.org. Information on dental programs is available at brookdalecc.edu.
