Monmouth County Launches Free Tire Pick-Up Program To Combat Mosquito Breeding

Monmouth County now offers a no-cost tire removal service to residents. It runs from Feb. 1 through March 31. Why? Tires left outside trap rainwater and become perfect spots for mosquitoes to multiply.
Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone says this tackles a real health problem in communities across the region. "Tires are one of the most common and dangerous mosquito breeding habitats, and services like the tire pick-up program are essential to reducing mosquito populations," Arnone said, according to Shore News Network.
Want your tires picked up? Call 732-542-3630. You'll share your name, where you live, how many tires you have, and their location on your property.
The county takes up to ten car tires per household. Tires still attached to rims don't qualify.
Commissioner Susan M. Kiley oversees the Department of Health and Human Services. She warns that one tire can spawn over 10,000 mosquitoes — each one capable of biting and spreading disease.
Kiley says tire collection fits into a broader plan to control mosquitoes before they become a bigger nuisance. Workers inspect breeding sites, treat larvae with chemicals, monitor diseases, and teach residents what helps to eliminate mosquitos. These actions in the early months prevent swarms when temperatures climb.
Officials stress that neighbors must pitch in. Getting rid of water-filled tires and other containers protects everyone's health and makes outdoor life more pleasant once bugs start flying.
Arnone urges people to book a pickup soon. The service ends when March does, serving Freehold and other parts of the county.
