Brick Township Backs 5 MPH Speed Reduction on West Princeton Avenue
Brick Township council introduced an ordinance on Jan. 27 to support cutting the speed limit on West Princeton Avenue from 35 miles per hour down to 30.

Brick Township council introduced an ordinance on Jan. 27 to support cutting the speed limit on West Princeton Avenue from 35 miles per hour down to 30. Ocean County must approve this change because the road sits under county control.
Why now? The county engineer requested the township weigh in after wrapping up two speed studies on West Princeton Avenue in 2025. These studies ran from Tuesday, Sept. 3 to Monday, Sept. 9 near Hoffman Street and Fort Street.
"The Ocean County engineer requested that the township consider the ordinance to reduce the speed limit on West Princeton Avenue. In 2025, the county completed two speed studies along West Princeton Avenue," said Councilman Vince Minichino, according to Star News Group.
The analysis tracked how fast cars traveled and counted vehicles exceeding the limit by five or 10 miles per hour. Officials applied the federal highway demonstration speed and safety methodology to figure out what limit made sense.
West Princeton Avenue belongs to the county, which means Brick Township can't alter the limit without county backing. The township needs a green light from county officials before any changes take effect.
Council members brought up the ordinance at their Jan. 27 meeting, but the county holds final say. The township has asked for county endorsement to push the speed reduction through.
