Breakthrough Hits and Milestones

Some of the most important milestones from Jan. 2 include:

  • 1965: Elvis Presley's soundtrack for the movie Roustabout, in which he starred, went to No. 1 on the Billboard 200. It was Presley's eighth No. 1 album on the chart, and it only spent a week at the top.
  • 1971: George Harrison's album All Things Must Pass reached the top spot on the Billboard 200, where it spent seven consecutive weeks. Harrison was the first former Beatle to have an album go to No. 1 in the U.S.
  • 1978: Ozzy Osbourne officially rejoined Black Sabbath, about two months after quitting. He recorded the Never Say Die! album with the band but was fired again in April 1979 due to his substance abuse and erratic behavior.

Notable Recordings and Performances

These are the notable recordings and performances associated with Jan. 2:

  • 1969: Led Zeppelin played their first Los Angeles show at the Whisky a Go Go on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, California. The band was still unknown in the U.S., as was their opener, Alice Cooper, and the two acts decided that Led Zeppelin was a more suitable main act due to Jimmy Page's reputation with The Yardbirds.
  • 1969: The Beatles began their recording sessions for the Let It Be album, initially called "Get Back," at Twickenham Film Studios in the U.K. The recording sessions were also filmed for a TV special, but it was scrapped due to the tense atmosphere within the band at the time.
