The American Littoral Society will host its 50th annual New Year's Day walk at Sandy Hook on Jan. 1, 2026. This marks half a century since the group started the tradition back in 1975.

Participants meet at 11 a.m. in Building 18. The building houses the group's headquarters within Fort Hancock Section of Gateway National Recreation Area. The walk runs until 1 p.m.

The route takes walkers to the northern tip of Sandy Hook. It covers just over two miles through roads, trails, and sand. Hot dogs and hot chocolate await when walkers return.

At the tip, participants will try signaling across New York Bight. Another group from the same organization walks at Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge in Queens at the same time.

Those interested should RSVP on the website. Dress for the weather.

Windswept beaches and dunes make up the terrain. The headquarters sits in the Fort Hancock section of the recreation area in Highlands.

According to their website, "The American Littoral Society promotes the study and conservation of marine life and habitat, protects the coast from harm, and empowers others to do the same."
