The 40th annual Beach Sweep is coming this weekend, April 12th, at 9 a.m. One of the locations is Philadelphia Avenue in Lavallette. Officials in Lavallette and the environmental advocacy group Clean Ocean Action organized the event. Now, there are 80-plus locations up and down the Jersey Shore where you can do your part, register, or even donate. Get all the information at CleanOceanAction.Org.
This program started back in 1985, and just had 75 people at one site, but now people have really stepped up because it grew to over 10,000 volunteers in 2018. The volunteers line up from Raritan to Delaware Bays and along the ocean to clean beaches and waterways, as well as underwater sites.
They will be cleaning for all the fish, birds, whales, and things of that nature because they mistake litter for food and it really affects' their stomachs and bodies. The volunteers, will be cleaning up the plastic items, cigarette filters, and fishing lines. All you need to do is bring a bucket and gloves and make a difference.
Gotts' Thoughts On This Beach Sweep
I love this idea, and living at the Jersey Shore for so many years now, I hate when I'm on the beach and find garbage on the sand. If everyone came here to enjoy the beach, and water and cleaned up after themselves we wouldn't have this issue.
It makes me upset when I see people leaving things behind on the beach. I have no shame even getting up out of my beach chair and letting them know that they left garbage. Some people even look at me like I'm crazy, but I tell them that this is our backyard and that there is a garbage can every 15 feet from each other. Just throw your waste away. See something say something, and let's keep our beaches, and water as clean as possible.
