The Final Perkins Restaurant Is Being Replaced By IHOP
The last Perkins restaurant and bakery In Ocean County is now closed and will be replaced by another breakfast icon, an IHOP restaurant.
According to the Asbury Park Press, with Perkins Restaurant & Bakery on South Main Street in the Forked River section of the township now closed, pancake restaurant giant IHOP is on the way. The Press goes on to say, Perkins closed on Oct. 2. It was the last Perkins in Ocean County, with a Hazlet restaurant the remaining location in Monmouth County. Over the years, Perkins, which was purchased out of bankruptcy in 2019 by Huddle House parent Ascent Hospitality Management, has closed locations in Toms River and Freehold Township. The Toms River Perkins on Route 37 West, became a Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, while the Freehold Perkins on Route 9 became one of the popular Brownstone Pancake Factory locations.

According to the company’s website, Perkins was founded in 1958 as a single pancake house in Ohio, and has transformed into the nation’s leading family restaurant. With nearly 300 company-owned and franchised locations in 32 states and two Canadian provinces. Through the years, Perkins has remained true to its mission of providing guests with friendly service and classic comfort dishes at a great price. The most iconic piece of Perkins Bakery is their homemade pie.
After starting out in ’58 as Perkins Pancake House, the chain changed names to Perkins Cake and Steak in 1969, when they introduced their lunch and dinner menus. Soon after, they settled on the current Perkins Restaurant and Bakery name. In 1986 the company began baking in store, and sales skyrocketed. So much so that Perkins was able to expand to Canada in 1988.
However, despite celebrating their 60th anniversary in 2018, the company has fallen on hard economic times.
The new IHOP in Forked River is expected to be open by December after interior renovations.
