Beer Made From Toilet Water Wins “Best In Show” At North Carolina Beer Tasting
Today’s No Sweat News travels to North Carolina, where a local craft brewery has teamed up with an unlikely partner to create a special beverage. That partner was the local water treatment plant. Beer made from treated wastewater. What a time to be alive.
Wait, what? Wastewater? Is that what I think it is? If you’re thinking that it’s what you flush and put down your drain… yes, that’s what wastewater is. Brown town.
I don’t know much, but I’ve spoken to a lot of local beer guys. Brewery experts that make the local Jersey shore brewing vibe so strong. And they say a lot about how important the water is. In fact, I recall when the guys from Source Brewing in Colts Neck popped in for a Morning Rat Race beer tasting, they were wicked proud of the local water that came from their deep wells on their property. So, from what my little brain remembers: water means a lot. Bad water makes bad beer. It makes sense, if you think about it: Water is the biggest ingredient in beer.
Cut back to Charlotte, North Carolina where the local water treatment plant wanted a project to highlight the fact that the water that came through their treatment system was not only clean but trustable for human consumption. While most water treatment plants just release the treated water into the local environment, the water from the Charlotte Water treatment plant is drinkable. CW found a willing partner in their local brewery: Town Brewing. Together they made a beer called “Renew Brew”. This beverage is a Pale Ale which is typically less hoppy than an IPA and a bit more malty. The traditional pale ale has less alcohol than an IPA as well.
Town Brewing and Charlotte Water set up a tent at a local beer competition. They entered their beverage in the blind taste test and guess what? Their Renew Brew won the “Best In Show” award. Top prize for a beer made from treated wastewater. What a time to be alive.
