Manasquan Boys Basketball Team: “Help Root On The Girls Team In Their Finals Tomorrow”
The controversy surrounding the Manasquan basketball team. The boys have already won.
While the huge controversy plays out about the Manasquan basketball boys high school team and the basket that was taken away, the boys themselves have a message for the community. Their message, “Please support our high school girls team who are in the finals tomorrow!”
In an extremely cool video posted Thursday evening, the Manasquan boys basketball team literally asked the community to rally behind their schoolmates on the girls team. They didn’t ask the community to support themselves. Watch the video below.
The Manasquan girls basketball team is playing Madison in the Group 2 championship matchup, according to NJ.com.
Should the young women of Manasquan win, it would be their second championship in three years.
Video: “As members of the Squan boys basketball team and students at Manasquan High School, we appreciate all of the love and support we’ve received over the last two days. With that being said, we ask the town and community to shift their attention to the girls team here at Manasquan as they take on Madison HS in the Group 2 finals at Rutgers on Saturday at 2. “
The controversy involving the boys team in the game against Camden has reached well beyond the normal fans of high school sports. Debates are being had in public, at work and on social media about how the Manasquan boys got robbed in the final second of their match up against Camden.
In my opinion, this is clearly a learning opportunity, a teachable moment as most parents will call it.
To be wronged so clearly is a tragic event. But to rise from that wrong and bring the attention to your school mates? That is an absolute win in my book. The entire Manasquan program is shining from the example this sets and I am here for it. Congratulations to the young men of ‘Squan.
No matter what may happen in an actual court with the wrong call made, these young men have heard the court of public opinion largely side with them. They could moan and complain. But instead, they rise above. Well done, well done indeed. -Carl

NJSIAA Releases Statement On Controversial Manasquan-Camden Game
Good morning, Sports fans! Davey Mac here with the final Sports Report of the week for ya! Basketball, hockey, and baseball scores news, and a crazy boxing story! But first!
If you didn’t see our story from yesterday, Manasquan High School was screwed over in what should have been a game-winning shot in the state semis over Camden.
Manasquan School District has now filed a lawsuit…asking the court to pause the championship game on Saturday. The NJSIAA released a statement saying they understood Manasquan’s frustration and apologized for the blown call…
“Here, all of the events happened within the final second of the game. One of the three officials counted the basket as beating the buzzer. The three officials then met at half-court to confer. A second official saw the ball in the shooter’s hands when the buzzer sounded. The officials then waived off the basket. Later, after being shown video clips, the second official agreed the basket should have counted.
That said, the rules are clear — once game officials leave the ‘visual confines of the playing court,’ the game is concluded, and the score is official. So, while the officiating crews’ reports indicate that a post-game review of footage of the play in question convinced them that the basket should have counted, the results could not then and cannot now be changed.
Also, NJSIAA Program Regulations, Section 14 – which governs the use of video – states, ‘No video or audio recording may be used to review or challenge the decision of a sports official.’ In addition, NJSIAA Bylaws, Article VII, Section 1 prohibit protests ‘based upon an official’s judgment or misinterpretation (misapplication) of the playing rules.’ The ruling on the court is, exclusively and by rule, what determines the game winner.
Unlike in college or the pros, there is no instant replay review in high school basketball in New Jersey. These are the rules of the game that all schools agree to follow, and which have been upheld on appeal. We apologize to the Manasquan team for the error.”
So what do you think? How should this controversy be handled? It’s a tough situation for Manasquan…hopefully, they get fair treatment on this. I’m Davey Mac…now on to the rest of the Sports Report!
