4 Days Until We Celebrate Local Summer
Hold up with all that moaning about, “Oh man… Summer is over!” And you gotta put a pause on your favorite fall activities and your pumpkin spice nonsense because in just a few days the Jersey Shore gets to celebrate Local Summer!
What is local summer? It’s the most wonderful time of the year! That’s right, kids, the most wonderful time of the year is not the Christmas holiday season, it’s Local Summer! Technically, local summer refers to the time after Labor Day when the summer crowds ease up a bit but the weather is still summerlike! I’m talking about warm days for the beach. I’m talking warm ocean waters, excellent for swimming. I’m talking less crowds, less traffic, and easier to get seats at our favorite Jersey Shore bars and restaurants. And I’m talking about no beach fees.
And this year for Locals Summer, Mother Nature has a nice little surprise for us: A heat wave is on the way as we begin the celebration! It’s looking like temperatures will be in the high 80’s and low 90’s for the kick-off! Hell yeah!
Don’t put away that beach chair. Don’t pack away that beach umbrella. Keep the beach towels ready and make sure the sunscreen stash is still stocked. Keep your toes in the sand for as long as you can!
One safety thing to note for all local summer enthusiasts: Ocean safety is always a concern during the September and October months. (Yes, I said October! I’ve played beach volleyball well into October for a few years.) Here’s the concern: The ocean can be more dangerous during this time of year because there’s more hurricane activity in the Atlantic Ocean. Those storms don’t have to be close to us to cause major dangerous rip currents and wave action. Adding to the concern of dangerous ocean conditions is that local beach lifeguard stations aren’t staffed, or if they are staffed, at much lower levels than during the height of summer. That’s a dangerous combination so be careful around the water.
In the meantime, Happy Local Summer! It’s almost here!
