Since you were a kid, you heard from the mouths of your parents and practically every authority figure who was part of your childhood, “Eat your vegetables, they’re good for you.”

Then of course there was Popeye the Sailor, the poster child for the iron rich leafy green, spinach.

Most people remember the lyrics to theme song to Popeye the Sailor Man cartoon:

I'm Popeye the Sailor Man,

I'm Popeye the Sailor Man.

I'm strong to the finich

Cause I eats me spinach.

I'm Popeye the Sailor Man.

I know you sang along to that.

I loved eating my vegetables. Never had a problem with broccoli, spinach, Brussels sprouts…etc

Although I did hate one vegetable…Lima Beans…blech!

Lots of vegetables provide vitamins and nutrients and are essential to staying healthy.

People who don’t eat healthy vegetables can get their vitamins and nutrients by taking supplements.

Now there was one thing that was never a huge part of the daily American diet,  Watercress.

A dark, leafy green that grows in natural spring water.

The first time I ever heard of watercress, was in an “I Love Lucy” episode.

Lucy and Ethel are traveling to Florida by car, along with Mrs. Grundy, a character in the episode played by actress, Elsa Lanchester.

The only food in the car was Mrs. Grundy’s picnic basket full of watercress sandwiches.

Lucy and Ethel reluctantly eat the watercress because they’re starving. Lucy refers to the watercress, calling it buttered grass.

Apparently, watercress was recently declared, The World’s Healthiest Food.

Watercress is now considered an essential part of a balanced diet due to its bounty of nutrients that can stave off disease and protect athletes from workout-induced injuries.

According to an article in the New York Post based on information they received from the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention, The health perks are due to the fact that, in part, the pungent superfood — which resides in cool, flowing water bodies throughout Eurasia, despite being introduced to North America — is the most nutrient-dense veggie on earth.

The article in the newspaper added; Watercress scored a perfect 100 out of 100, beating out Chinese cabbage (91.99 points), Swiss chard (89.27 points), beetroot (87.08 points) and even spinach (86.43 points) in the CDC’s vegetable rankings.

Some benefits of eating watercress include, large amounts of iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium and vitamin K, which is important for blood-clotting.

Now, off to find out where the heck I can get watercress and how to eat it beside as a sandwich.
