On education, school-by-school results of the spring standardized testing were released on Friday and they show learning slowdowns in Math and English. Education advocates continue to call for more solutions to the learning loss caused by the coronavirus pandemic. New Jersey was among the last three states in the country to make these figures available including Vermont and Maine.
A tragic accident on the Garden State Parkway yesterday afternoon claimed two lives. It happened northbound just before exit 98. A driver of a Jeep hit a stopped Chevrolet SUV on the right shoulder. 75-year-old Jerome Digiovanni was also hit by the Jeep, he was outside of the Chevy. Also killed was 57-year-old Ronald Devingo. The investigation is ongoing.
The Theta Chi fraternity at Rutgers University is being sued after a pledge was severely injured back in March. 19-year-old Armand Runte allegedly consumed a life-threatening amount of alcohol and fell down a flight of stairs during "Big Brother Night". He suffered multiple skull fractures. The lawsuit contends that the brothers waited three hours before seeking help, and also tried concealing evidence. The college says their policy is clear - no alcohol shall be present at Greek activities.
Remember the state’s plan to turn the Superfund site in Toms River into a public park? Well, Toms River officials have denounced that plan for the Ciba Geigy land. According to the Asbury Park Press, leadership is opposed to any development of the land. A resolution passed after the announcement saying that that plan, “does not go far enough to hold BASF accountable for the still unhealed injuries of their clandestine and noxious operations”. There’s a 30-day public comment period for the proposal, comments can be sent to the Office of Natural Resource Restoration at the state DEP.
