Let’s Take A Tour Of The New Silverton Dog Park!
A few weeks ago I wrote here about the news of the brand new Silverton Dog Park coming soon to Silverton Park, 71 Maine Street, Toms River. Well, it’s finally open!
My wife and I were dying to take our 3 year old Boxer-American Bulldog, Oakley, and our year and a half old Black Mouthed Cur, Cash to play. Finally, we found the time early Sunday afternoon. The park wasn’t very crowded so that was a plus, as you always have to be wary introducing your dogs into new situations with other dogs.
The dog park is broken down into two fenced areas in the back of Silverton Park.
The one on the south side of the park, closest to the parking lot is the fenced area for smaller dogs. The larger fenced area further east is for the big boys, like my two pups. After some nuzzling and sniffing through the fence at small dog park with a pair of puppies and an adorable English Bulldog, it was time to hit the large breed area. Luckily we had it all to ourselves!
The first thing I noticed is that there is a lot, and I mean a LOT of room to run.
The grass area is close to 100 yards long, by about 60 yards wide, in my estimation. Right in the middle of the grass run is a little hill the dogs have fun running up and down. To the east of the grass is an expansive wooded area that my two dudes just loved. Trees, sticks on the ground, and tons and tons of leaves to frolic in. They roamed the perimeter at first, no doubt looking for a hole in the new fence! Then they were off to do their own thing. Mostly sniffing and “hunting” for squirrels and rabbits they never can catch!
The park was well planned out.
Some of the human amenities of the large breed park I enjoyed were the 3 doggie bag and waste stations, although one of them was a bit full. Furthermore, there are many nice new composite benches where you can sit and chill if running with Fido tires you out a bit. Additionally, the gates were made with some thought. They use the half ring closures that lock into the frame poles, so it’s easy for a human to open and close with one hand. Lastly, there is a vestibule area between the fenced park and the outside, so you can make sure you have control of your dog before entering or leaving the area. Kind of like a staging area, to make sure you are prepared.
Overall, it was a huge success for us and our dogs. They got over their initial crazy excitement and had a good hour of running and playing. We will without question be returning to the Silverton Dog Park in the coming weeks. I actually can’t wait for some snow on the ground to take them as well. Check out some of my photos below of our beautiful Sunday in the park!
