What I Did On My Summer Staycation, By Jimmy Steal
When I was a kid our neighbors would always come over the weekend after their Summer vacation and show us dozens of photos they took from their road trips to Florida, Upstate New York, Las Vegas, etc. My mom and I were poor so our vacations were usually kept to local events like carnivals, fishing, and walks in the woods. It wasn’t a trip to Las Vegas, but it stuck with me. So now, I always try and set aside sometime in the summer to do a “Staycation”, and experience things in my own backyard, as well as being adventurous on state road trips. With that being said, I present to you, my Summer 2022 Staycation!
The week started with a nice 11-mile bike ride through Silverton with the wife. Mind you this was a day or so before the heatwave that gripped us last week. The next day I woke up to my Boxer, Oakley’s ass in my face, which reminded me I had to take our Black Mouthed Cur, Cash to the Vet for a much-needed nail clipping and a couple of shots. By the end of that morning, I needed some shots, if you know what I’m saying! Instead, I had a little fresh watermelon with Tajin seasoning. It’s what all the hip kids are doing these days. I highly recommend it!
The following day the heat really took hold, and it was time for us to head to our local beach on the beautiful Barnegat Bay. I did a little fishing while there but caught nothing but pesky Blue Claw Crabs on my line. When it’s that hot, I like to put my chair right in the water and soak like a fat hippo, but that’s just me.
Later, I decided it was time to get my silver mane cut and a shave to go with it. After my haircut, I shaved and left my mustache as a joke to show my wife but she loved it and convinced me to keep it for the rest of my Staycation. I have to admit, at first I felt stupid, but it’s grown on me..No pun intended. Friday was the big day, time to celebrate my daughter’s 21st birthday by traveling with some of her friends, and my wife down to Cape May, to visit the Cape May Winery, and The Cape May Brewery. Dude, it was friggin HOT, but the beverages and vibes at both places were just what I needed to put my Staycation in perspective. It’s not where you are, but who you are with. Experiences man! Sometimes you don’t need to leave your comfort zone to find a little comfort.
I hope you enjoy my Staycation Gallery more than I enjoyed my neighbor’s Polaroids from Vegas in 1978.
