I hear it all the time. In the backyard gardening, at the beach, in her car. My wife is a Yacht Rock FREAK. She loves the smooth sounds of Christopher Cross and Toto as much as I love Metallica and Foo Fighters. Now I've been dragging her to shows for years and she's been a trooper. Granted it's easier for her to enjoy and Incubus show as opposed to Five Finger Death Punch, but she's been to them all with me in our 2 plus decades together. Well this past Friday night it was my turn to pay the piper, or saxaphonist, you might say. Thanks to my friend Robbin at Omni Media, and Caroline and the great folks at the Stone Pony, I was able to secure some side stage passes to Yacht Rock at the Stone Pony Summerstage. Now the two things I know about Yacht Rock shows are, almost everyone is drinking their faces off, and almost everyone is wearing Captains hats! Like you know, the Captain of a yacht? Yeah, it's freaky.  Anyway, I went out and grabbed two of these hats and figured we'd have a laugh. So there we were, boat drinks in hand, adorned in Captains hats, and at a SOLD OUT, by the way, Yacht Rock show! I dragged my friend the Norminator with us so I could at least have some male bonding time during "Sailing". Our friends Chuck and Sue came also sans hats, and in a very upper crust move, my wife gave Sue her hat at the end of the evening. As for the band? Outstanding musicians! I mean spot on. They really play up the Yacht Rock schtick too. Mullets, stashes, bell bottoms, cop shades, and 70's blouses. It's quite amusing.

Jimmy Yacht Rock As they ran through their selection of Mellow Gold of the 70's and 80's I suddenly realized something..I not only knew all of these tunes, but I was enjoying myself! I mean, the Pina Colada Song is no Stairway To Heaven, but to Yacht Rock fans, it may as well be. They ended the night in the rain with a bangin' rendition of Baker Street, complete with hot and heavy sax. Haha. All in all a great fun night out with my love. And who knows, maybe I'll keep that Captain's hat around, just in case...

Next to that, it would have to be the day I was baked on earth day in Central Park and met Keefer Sutherland…baked too, I believe.
