Aerosmith have “quite a bit” of archival material tucked away dating all the way back to the ’70s, according to Joe Perry, and they plan to release it in the coming years.

Perry was inspired to dig up the archival content following the band’s recent 1971: The Road Starts Hear release, which features previously unheard rehearsal footage of Aerosmith’s early material.

“It sounded so good. I mean, we could have put that out on the first record,” Perry said in a new interview with Ultimate Classic Rock. “We just had two microphones when we recorded that. It shows how conscious we were of the dynamics and how the band sounded as a whole. Listening back to it, any time I hear those songs, it brings me back.”

Moreover, the archival material could arrive sooner than a new Aerosmith studio album… and he questions whether or not there will be another album (their last studio album was 2012’s Music From Another Dimension!). “I was thinking about, ‘Well, do we need to write another record?’ Then I started thinking: Going back, all of these songs have alternate takes that have different things about them,” he explained, noting that they’ve also recorded lots of shows since reuniting in the ’80s.

As for timing, Perry said Aerosmith is “looking over the next two or three years at releasing this stuff, decade by decade in different formats. There’s a lot of stuff there. At the same time, we’re still out there touring, so it’s not like we’re just going to sit back and curate our museum, so to speak. It’s part of our history, but we’re still going out there and doing it.”

In other news, Perry and the Hollywood Vampires recently announced a string of European tour dates for next summer.
