British rock band Led Zeppelin, (left - right): John Paul Jones, John Bonham (1948 - 1980), Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, pose in front of an their private airliner The Starship, 1973.

The long-awaited Led Zeppelin documentary, Becoming Led Zeppelin, premiered over the weekend at the Venice Film Festival, as we previously reported. And now, the trailer for the film is out. However, it doesn’t really reveal much: all we see is cool vintage performance footage of the band, as well as footage of an actual zeppelin.

What will long-time fans learn from the documentary? Rolling Stone reviewed the film, and noted that the title is Becoming Led Zeppelin: it ends in 1970 with the release of their second album, II.

According to Rolling Stone, at Saturday’s press conference at the Venice Film Festival right before the movie’s world premiere, Page told reporters that he turned down previous attempts at doing a Zeppelin documentary; it seems clear that he wants the focus of any authorized documentary to only be on the music. The directors also told Page everything that would be included, which makes sense; Page has always run all of Zeppelin’s decidions. But as the reviewer writes, “For viewers, the experience of hearing these rock heroes’ origin stories presented this way sometimes feels micromanaged to a fault.”

That doesn’t mean that it isn’t worth your time, though: the reviewer also says, “But dear god on the stairway to heaven, what you get here footage-wise, especially when we finally get to the actual band’s formation? It’s revelatory even if you’ve heard live versions of these songs before, and often straight-up gobsmacking.”

The film has not yet announced a release date.
