Each year The Partnership For A Drug-Free New Jersey hosts a competition that challenges NJ high school students to produce original music with an anti-drug message. The “Your Song! Your Voice! Shout Down Drugs NJ” competition is a great talent showcase that awards recording contracts to 3 winners from across the Garden State.
In 2020 the competition transitioned to an online concert event hosted on The Partnership For A Drug Free New Jersey’s YouTube channel. This year’s event was streamed live on Friday 5/7. You can view the full concert below, hosted by 95.9 The Rat’s own afternoon drive host Jimmy Steal. Following the live stream, Jimmy Steal announced the First, Second, and Third place winners of this year’s competition live on the air on WRAT-FM.
The winners of the 2021 “Your Song! Your Voice! Shout Down Drugs NJ” competition will be featured this week on Jersey Rock. Tune to 95.9 The Rat Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 11:30 pm to hear the winning songs and a call-in from the artists behind them!
The week kicks off Tuesday 5/11 with Third Place winner Peter Sawyer. Peter is a Freshman at Paramus High School. His song “Scars” won him a $2,000 recording contract. You can follow Peter Sawyer on instagram @peter_g_music and learn more about him at petergmusic.webs.com.
On Wednesday 5/12 we’ll check in with Second Place winners Sophie Regenye and Angelina Amato of Never Too Late. The N.T.L duo attend Toms River High School North. Their track “Holding Out” earned them a $3,000 recording contract. Stay on top of their music on instagram @N.T.L.Official.
We close out the feature on Thursday 5/13 with First Place winner Samantha Yannarelli. Samantha is from Atlantic Highlands and attends Mater Dei Prep in Middletown. Her song “They Swore” scored her a $5,000 recording contract. In addition to being a singer/songwriter/musician, Samantha is also an accomplished actress. You can see her in Mater Dei Prep’s online production of “A Killer Party” this Friday 5/14. The video stream will be available HERE between 5/14 and 5/23 .
